Miss Bertha, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Leininger, was married Monday morning to John Gourlay, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Gourlay of Ontario, Canada. At the close of the mass Mrs. Shafer, Miss Leininger and Mrs. George Leininger Jr. sang "On this day.'' Attending the couple were Miss Helen Walsh and Charles Tone of Lincoln. The bride was attired in a gown of orchid chiffon of princess style and a hat of orchid horsehair. She carried a bouquet of bride's roses and baby breath. After the ceremony the bridal party went to the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Leininger, where breakfast was served to fifty persons. The breakfast table was decorated in orchid and green. Following the breakfast Mr. and Mrs. Gourlay left for a wedding trip to Denver. They will make their home at Lincoln. ================== The Sutton News (Sutton, NE), Friday, March 5, 1931; pg. 1 Bertha Leininger Gourlay The sad news of the untimely passing of Bertha Leininger Gourlay, beloved wife of John J. Gourley of Lincoln, brought a sense of sorrow and regret to the hearts of her many relatives and friends in this community. The death summons came to her at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Lincoln, Nebr., after a brief illness due to pneumonia. Despite all that medical aid, professional skill and loving administrations, she passed peacefully to her reward near the midnight hour of February 26, 1931, fortified by the last rites of Holy Mother Church. The remains lay in state in her own home in Lincoln Thursday and on Friday were brough to Sutton to the home of her parents, Mrs. and Mrs. George W. Leininger. On August 11, 1930, she became the wife of John Gourlay of Lincoln, gracefully assuming the role of presiding genius of a very happy home, most devoted to her loving husband, her family and her many friends. Ever cheerful and thoughtful her life was her best eulogy, for she truly lived the philosophy of life that had been instilled in her as a child in her own home; as a student at Mt. Saint Mary's Seminary, Omaha, Nebraska, and again as a nurse trained under the wonderful supervision of the good Sisters of St. Francis of St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Lincoln, where she graduated with honor in 1927. Although not carved in stone or marble the memories of her virtues will be a most lasting memorial with whom she came in contact during her professional career as a nurse and to those who came under the influence of her daily life. She cultivated the things that remained permanently - Faith, Hope and Charity - real possessions to the end. The funeral services were held on Saturday morning at the Immaculate Conception church (sic), Sutton. Requieum (sic) High Mass was celebrated by Rev. J. McKenna whose comforting words were most consoling to the bereaved. During the ceremony, Mrs. Frank Shafer (of Giltner) and Mrs. George Leininger, assisted by Mrs. M. J. Nagle at the organ sang "Raise Me, Jesus," in a most touching manner. There was a wealth of beautiful floral tributes, testimonials of love and friendship. At the close of the services, the funeral procession wended it's [sic] way to Calvary's cemetery (sic), where interment was made. Her five brothers and Mr. Charles Tone of Lincoln, acting as pallbearers. The deceased leaves to mourn her great loss, her beloved husband, father and mother; five brothers George, Carl, Fred, John and Theodore, all of Sutton; six sisters, Miss Marie of Paris, France, Mrs. Clarence Deffenbaugh of Valley, Nebr., Miss Edna of Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Walter Joyce of Harvard, Nebr., Miss Alice [sic] of Boise, Idaho, and Miss Cecelia of Sutton, Nebr. Those coming from a distance to attend the funeral were: Mrs. Thomas Gourlay, Damascus, Ontario, Canada; Mrs. George Leininger, Mildred George Jr. and Harold of Kimball, Nebr.; Mr. George Geis and son Robert, of York, Nebr., Mr. Fred Geis and son Leo, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Leininger, Mr. and Mrs. J.
