HOWREY WALKED TO IOWA FROM INDIANA IN 1851; ENTERED LAND IN 1852 John M. Howrey, the last of the early band of pioneers that settled in Spring Creek township in the early fifties, died at 3 p.m. yesterday at his residence in La Porte City, in his eighty-ninth year. Death was due to age. With him during the last year of his growing enfeeblement was his daughter, Mrs. C.F. Robe, and her husband spend part of the time there. Services will be from the Methodist Episcopal church in La Porte City at 2 p.m. tomorrow and burial will be in the cemetery at that place. Surviving are five children--Mrs. Robe, W.H. Howrey, and Mrs. J.A. Bown, Waterloo; George Howrey, on the homestead in Spring Creek that has been in the family since 1852, and Mrs. Charles Oren, living at the east edge of Spring Creek in Buchanan county. Surviving also are a sister in Missouri, 91 years of age; a sister in Montana, and one in Indiana; two brothers in Missouri and another brother, James, Coldwater, Mich. James is the father of B.J. Howrey, Waterloo. Mrs. John Howrey died April 27, 1920. She was Miss Nancy Clark before her marriage, a daughter of John Clark, who came from Indiana and settled in Spring Creek township in 1852. Mr. Howrey and Miss Clark were married April 17, 1856, at the bride's home, Rev. Mr. Wilson performing the ceremony. At that time, people lived in log cabins; neighbors were few and far between. Many of the pioneers made their way ploddingly to weddings and funeral in crude vehicles drawn by ox teams. NEVER GAVE HIS NOTE--Shortly after this happy event the couple took up residence on a farm a few miles distant, four miles northeast of what later became La Porte City. Their farming equipment comprised one horse, two cows, and a few crude implements. The land was entered by Mr. Howrey from the government in 1852. In this connection it may be of interest to note that Mr. Howrey, altho sorely pressed financially in the early days when prices were low and money scarce, never gave his note to any man and never in all the years that he owned the farm did he place a mortgage upon it. He never ran an account at a store and never had anything charged. It was his policy to pay cash, and, when not able to pay for any article he wanted, he forwent its possession until he could pay. His was a life of mental composure and serenity. He never became angry or violently excited. That trait was characteristic of his family and accounted for the members attaining such unusual longevity. WALKED FROM INDIANA TO IOWA--Mr. Howrey was born at Winchester, Randolph County, O., May 1, 1834. He first came to Iowa in the fall of 1851, walking most of the way from Winchester, more than 400 miles. His experiences on that trip were quite diverting for a boy of 17. He walked over unbroken trails part of the way. At one or two points along the way he boarded stage coaches, but found that method of travel had its drawbacks also. There were no improved highways and the horses that drew the coaches would become mired every little while. For some distance, Mrs. Howrey walked with a long rail on one shoulder. This was to be used as a lever to lift the heavy coach out of the mud when it became mired. "As long as I had to walk most of the way, I thought it would be better to part company with the stage and go it alone," he said. "I at least would not have to carry a heavy rail on my back." HELPED BUILD FIRST STORE HERE--It was on this trip in 1851 that Mr. Howrey came into Waterloo, then a tiny village with few log cabins, but with high aspirations. It was then, too, that he assisted in the erection of a cabin which was to be Waterloo's first store. Mr. Howrey in his later years was not able to say exactly where it was located. The Howrey home in Spring Creek township was known far and wide for its hospitality. It was frequently the scene of happy neighborhood gatherings. There were many relatives and a wide circle of friends and in the early days, and even down to as late as 20 years ago, there were many gatherings about the fireside. These social affairs were the chief diversion, outside of church and schoolhouse entertainments, before the advent of the motor car, the rural free deliveryman, the telephone and the movie. Mrs. Howrey is the last of that band of pioneers in Spring Creek who settled in the timber along the creek in the early fifties. They included the Clark, Howrey, Danny and Teeter families, all sturdy tillers of the soil--honest, industrious, neighborly, hospitable.
