Mr. Koob submitted to his first operation on Feb. 22nd when it was discovered that the appendix had been ruptured or several days. For a time he appeared to be making satisfactory progress but the poison had penetrated his system so completely that he was unable to shake it off. A second operation was performed on March 4th in an effort to save his life but it proved of no avail. Funeral services were held at 9:30 Monday morning at St. Mary's Catholic church with Rev. Fr. J.M. Neppel in charge. Interment was made in Calvary cemetery. John Koob Sr., son of John and Margaret Kemp Koob, was born in Luxemburg Sept. 24, 1879, and died in Hawarden March 7, 1936, at the age of 56 years, 5 months and 13 days. He grew to manhood in his native country where on Oct. 22, 1906, he was united marriage with Susan Redding. They continued to make their home in Luxemburg for a number of years following their marriage but in the spring of 1913 came to America, arriving in Hawarden on May 23rd of that year and the family home has since continued to be in this city. He immediately secured employment with the North Western Railway Company here and for many years was employed in the car repair department as an air brake repairer. Mr Koob was a steady reliable worker and his genial nature made him popular with this fellow employees. He was a splendid citizen, honorable and upright in all his dealings, with his chief concern ever being for the welfare of his family. He was highly esteemed by all who knew him and universal sympathy is extended to his sorrowing family. He is survived by his wife and six children, John Jr., Margaret, Emil Joseph, Bernard and Robert, all of Hawarden. One son preceded him in death. He also leaves three sisters, Mrs. John B. Seiwerath, Mrs. John Theis Sr. and Mrs. John Muller, all of Hawarden. One brother preceded him in death. Out of town relatives who were here to attend the funeral included Mike Herrig and Mrs. John Reeff of Alton and John Theis Jr. of Alcester. The Independent (Hawarden, Iowa) 3/12/1936
