He passed into eternity on April 6, 2009, at his home at the Churchill Retirement Home in Churchill. He was a gentle spirit loved by all who knew him, including his caregivers at the retirement home. John married Gertrude Nap on Nov. 18, 1941. They lived on the family farm in the dry land hills south of Manhattan where they raised their six children. They later became involved in logging and eventually sold the farm to their son, Don. The logging business took them to the Dillon area for a few years before coming back to Manhattan to retire. They also spent several winters in Yuma, Ariz. John had numerous talents. He loved playing music and could play many different instruments. He taught himself to paint landscapes and wildlife, and enjoyed giving them away to friends and family. He loved to fish. He and Gerdie spent many enjoyable hours taking their motorhome to various lakes around the state. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gerdie; son, Don; a granddaughter, and a great-granddaughter. John is survived by his sons, Stan (Naomi) Kuipers of Lewistown, and Dennis of Helena; daughters, Susan (Sonny) Sobrepena of Townsend, Judy (Bill) Oyler of Manhattan, and Terri Carlson of Bozeman; daughter-in-law, Sharyn Kuipers of Manhattan; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Ella (Andy) Droge of Manhattan, Bette Stepan of Cardwell, and Edna Marks of Belgrade; as well as a host of friends. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 13, at Dokken-Nelson Sunset Chapel in Bozeman. Interment will follow in Meadow View Cemetery. A reception will be held at Manhattan School following the graveside service. Visitation for family and friends will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 12, at Dokken-Nelson.
