He was seven when his father, Michael Kurt, died in a farm accident in September of 1849. His mother, Maria Scheitler Kurt, remarried the next year. John Kurt's stepfather, John B. Sauser, who was also his second cousin, was a diligent and industrious farmer who soon accumulated a large amount of farmland along with a growing family. John Kurt grew up on the Sauser farm with his mother, his stepfather, his younger sisters (Mary and Margaret) and younger brothers (Peter and Jacob). His half-siblings completed the family (Catherine, Anna, Peter, Susan and Michael). The Kurt children and the Sauser children grew up as one family, surrounded by the same paternal relatives, the Kurts and the Sausers of Cascade who had come from Luxembourg as part of the same extended family. As the oldest child in the household and the only male child of laboring age for some years, John worked hard on his stepfather's farm, but he also attended the public schools. The 1860 U.S. federal census for Cascade Township, Dubuque County, Iowa, reports him as age 18, a farm laborer and scholar. Although John's family started life in Iowa in a log cabin, they prospered in farming and moved up to a beautiful brick house and extensive farm holdings. As an adult, John Kurt had his own land. At age 30, he was the owner of 280 acres in Section 23, Cascade Township.2 By this time, he was married to Mary Till who had come from Luxembourg with her parents as a child, and they were raising a family of their own, eventually ten children in all. John Kurt and Mary Till were married 9 February 1870 in Jackson County, Iowa. 6 They lived on John's farm in Cascade Township, Dubuque County,7 where their first six children were born: Peter, born 22 December 1870; John Baptiste, born 11 April 1872; Francis (Frank), born 25 October 1875; Anna, born 9 December 1877; William (Will), born 27 October 1879; Charles (my father), born 10 September 1882. In 1882, the same year as the birth of their sixth child, Charles (my father), John and Mary Kurt moved their family from the Cascade farm to a larger farm south of Bellevue in Jackson County near Mary's brothers and her widowed mother. According to the "History of Jackson County," John purchased 400 acres of land in that county seven miles southwest of Bellevue, which he cultivated and improved and "prospered in his undertakings." Mary Till Kurt died at age 42 in 1895. On 4 May 1898, just a few days before his 56th birthday, John Kurt remarried. He then engaged his family in other important events by turning the Bellevue farm over to his second son, John Baptiste Kurt, and moving into the town of Bellevue with his second wife, Christina Detterman Schwirtz, five of his children (Ann, Charlie, Clara, Celeste and Eddie) and a stepson, Frank Schwirtz. John Kurt continued to live in the town of Bellevue with his second wife and the younger children — Clara, Celeste and Eddie. The "History of Jackson County, Iowa" describes his home as "a brick house on Third Street to which he has added until it is one of the fine homes of the city, a model of comfort, beauty and convenience."
