Description	:	John LaFayette Crook was one of 14 children born to Douglas Crook and Almeda Harris Crook. He was born on a farm near Salem, Nebraska, February 6, 1887. John was married to Mary Elizabeth Ziegler in 1909. This union was blessed with 7 children. They made their home on a farm near Mt. Clare until the late 1920's, when the family moved to Superior where he was employed as a painter and worked on the police force where he served as chief of police for several years. Mary passed away April 1, 1965. John Kept busy... Read More	John LaFayette Crook was one of 14 children born to Douglas Crook and Almeda Harris Crook. He was born on a farm near Salem, Nebraska, February 6, 1887. John was married to Mary Elizabeth Ziegler in 1909. This union was blessed with 7 children. They made their home on a farm near Mt. Clare until the late 1920's, when the family moved to Superior where he was employed as a painter and worked on the police force where he served as chief of police for several years. Mary passed away April 1, 1965. John Kept busy with his work and gardening. John was married to Ola Matteson on June 9, 1971. They shared 8 years together. Ola passed away January 4, 1980, leaving John alone the last few years of his life. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary of 57 years and Ola of 8 years, 3 sons, Glenn, Percy and Dale, one daughter, Nellie Hanson, 9 brothers and 4 sisters. He is survived by two daughters, Lucille and her husband Gordon McKee of Superior and Velma and her husband Vance Ellis of Sun City, California, and one son Barney and his wife Evelyn of Superior, 13 grandchildren, many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. John will be missed by all who knew him. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was the first man to shoot a rooster pheasant in Nuckolls County....in fact, he was a very young man. No one could figure out what kind of bird he had shot, they had to get the bird books out to identify it as a rooster pheasant. He loved hunting so much that he wore out several shot guns. He took great pride in his truck garden. One year he had 1,500 tomato plants producing fruit. John has a special talent as a painter. He would take a gunny sack, shellac it, use it as a canvas and paint a picture on it. Not with an artist's paint brush, but an ordinary house painting brush. John passed away on October 2, 1984, at the Beatrice Community Hospital in Beatrice, Nebraska, at the age of 97 years, 7 months and 26 days. Funeral services were held Saturday, October 6, 1984, at 2:00 p.m. from the Megrue-Price Funeral Home Chapel in Superior with Rev. John Besore III officiating. Music was provided by Ilene Nielsen, soloist singing "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In The Garden" with Thelma Roe as organist and accompanist. Casketbearers were: Burdette Hanson, Jerry Heskett, Kim Delka, Don Diehl, John Crook and Scott McKee. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery, Superior. Megrue-Price Funeral Home of Superior was in charge of the arrangements. The Nelson Gazette, Thursday, October 11, 1984 John's WW l Registration states he was born in Stella, which is in Richardson Co, Nebraska. Thought you'd like to know.
