John graduated Sunny Slope Country School in Hughes County in 1953 and Pierre High School in 1957. He attended the University of Nebraska for 2 ½ years on a football scholarship. He met the love of his life, "Patty," in 6th grade at 4-H camp. They were married on August 21st, 1957. To this union four children were born. In 1960 he left school and returned to the Hughes/Sully County area to farm. In 1972 he moved his family to the Deuel County farm/ranch that would become home until 1997. In late 1996, John took a leap of faith, sold the farm, and applied to become director of the Tree of Life Ministry on the Rosebud Reservation in Mission, SD. From 1997 through 2003 John and Pat hosted work teams from all over the United States trying to address the needs on the reservation. He worked on everything from home repair to distributing clothing and food. Once "retired" from Tree of Life, He and his wife returned home to Clear Lake. Since then, he filled his time with substitute teaching, assisting at R-n-C Cabinets, playing bridge, running to grandchildren's events, and traveling. John has lived a life of service - service to his God, his family, and his community. This service took him on mission trips to Africa, the Appalachians, Alaska, and Mississippi following Katrina. He served on multiple school boards, the hospital board, township boards, Jaycees, Farm Bureau, and church boards, His belief that a person has no right to complain unless they were willing to work for change fueled him. And work for change he did. He was a charter member of the Northeast Coop and the Deuel Booster Club. Seeing the need for a track/football field, he resigned from the school board and spearheaded the project that would become Cardinal Field. He also chaired the church building committee in Pierre. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Robert (Rob), brother William (Billy), father-in-law, Robert O'Rielly, mother-in-law, Velma (Jernigan) O'Rielly, sister-in-law Wanda (Kerry) Dilley, brother-in-law, Dean O'Rielly, niece, Rhonda Dilley and nephews, Kerry Jon Blankenship, and William Luecke. Left to celebrate his life are his wife of 64 years, Patricia (Pat) O'Rielly Luecke, his children, Deb (Jon) Lessman of Clear Lake, Lenny (Kathy Jo) Luecke of Kindred, ND, Becky (Dave) Luecke Hunter of Groton, SD and Pam Luecke of Clear Lake, eight grandchildren, Tigh (Erica) Lessman of Chancellor, SD, Kayce Lessman of Sioux Falls, SD, Katie (Aaron) Carlson of Kindred, ND, Caleb (Libby) Luecke of St. Paul, MN, Danny (Kali) Luecke of Fargo, ND, Chelsey (Justin) Wolthuizen of San Antonio, TX, Austin (Kate) Luecke of Sioux Falls, SD, and Hannah (Brady) Edgar of Rockham, SD, 20 great-grandchildren with two more on the way, his brother, Larry (Lorna) Luecke of Las Vegas and sisters Margaret (Lytle) Blankenship of Kerrville, TX and Irene (Lyle) Bamsey of Sioux Falls, SD and numerous nieces and nephews. - Houseman Funeral Home
