LOUIS SCHERER, HARTFORD Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church at Hartford Thursday, January 13 for J. Louis Scherer, who died Sunday, January 9, 1972 in a Sioux Falls hospital after being hospitalized for two months. Rev. William Meile officiated at the service. Mrs. Adrian Pearson, organist, accompanied the male quartet of the church. Casket bearers were Walter Ginsbach, Harvey Matthies, Dale Whitney, Raymond Rubach, Floyd Kelley and Louis Theel. Mr. Scherer was born in Germany August 11, 1883. He came to the Batesville, Indiana area as an infant with his parents. He married Sarah Schlieman on September 3, 1909 at Marion, Iowa. They moved to Hartford where they were engaged in farming. Mrs. Scherer died in 1958. A daughter, Alice, also preceded him in death. Mr. Scherer was a resident of the Colonial Manor at Salem for almost 5 years. He was interested in local affairs and was a member of the School Board for many years. He served on the Fair Board when the Fair was held at Renner, and also after it was moved to Sioux Falls. He was a personal friend of the W.H. Lyons and helped to get the Lyons to donate the ground where the Fair is now located. He was active in the Masonic Lodge at Hartford and received his 50 year pin and award on June 3, 1970. Masonic rites were held at the Miller Funeral Chapel on Wednesday evening. He is survived by a son, Leo of Hartford; a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Bethel) Larsen of Sioux Falls; two granddaughters , Mrs. Vince VanLoh of Omaha, Nebraska and Mrs. David Nieland of Minneapolis, Minnesota; two grandsons, Jerome Larsen of Madison, Wisconsin and James Larsen of Sioux Falls; and 6 great- grandchildren. Those attending the funeral of their uncles were Mr. and Mrs. Carl Scherer, Mrs. Albert Herbrand, Mrs. Wally Lombard of Oak Park and Foley, Minnesota; Mrs. Vincent VanLoh, Omaha, and Mrs. David Nieland, Minneapolis, daughters of Mrs. Kenneth Larsen of Sioux Falls came for the Memorial services for their grandfather. Interment was in the Hartford Cemetery. Husband of Sarah Schlieman Scherer, father of Leo, Bethel and Alice.
