John was born at the family ranch west of Columbus to parents John Ludvig Holmgren and Nellie Nelson Holmgren, who were Swedish immigrants and early settlers in Montana. John lived and worked at the family ranch west of Columbus, raised his family on the ranch north of Reed Point and later returned to the family ranch. He was a 1935 graduate of Columbus High School. John married Margaret Allen March 24, 1957 in Billings. They raised 3 children, Patty, John Dennis, and Carol. John was a man of faith. He and Margo enjoyed their daily devotionals. He was a member of American Lutheran Church in Billings and Reed Point Evangelical Church and loved to participate in the activities at church. He taught adult Sunday School for many years at the Evangelical Church in Reed Point. John avidly attended programs and sports while the kids attended Reed Point School and served on the school board. He loved his family, his ranch, and all animals. He also loved fine art and poetry. His favorite past time was reading, especially about history. John loved to travel. He and Margo got to see many sights around the world from Alaska to Europe to the Panama Canal. He especially enjoyed visiting his distant relatives in Sweden who took him to see where his family came from. John was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Paul, Herbert, and Norman, sisters Edna and Elvera, son John Dennis Holmgren, and numerous aunts and uncles. John is survived by his wife of 59 years Margaret (Margo), daughters Carol Holmgren of Billings, Patty Holmgren Appleby (Jim) of Florence, grandsons John Nelson Appleby and Ian Charles Appleby of Helena, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Family will greet friends during the visitation at Smith West Chapel, 304 34th Street West on Thursday, May 12, from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. Funeral service is Saturday, May 14, at 11 am at American Lutheran Church, 5 Lewis Avenue. Our sincere thanks to the angels at Riverstone Hospice. Memorials as desired.
