From a young man, a stepson of the deceased, the following particulars of death were learned: Mr. Mahaffy and the boy, with other members of the family, had been up the Roaring Fork for berries, and when returning through Nellie Bird's ranch found one of their horses in the pasture and stopped to catch it and take it home. After a short chase the animal was caught and Mr. Mahaffy started to lead it but immediately complained of feeling dizzy and said he could hardly see. He requested the stepson to lead the horse and said he would follow in a minute, but the next moment fell to the ground and did not speak again. Death was very sudden and the doctors who were called pronounced it heart failure. This theory of the case is carried out by the fact that the deceased has been subject to slight heart trouble heretofore. Coroner Perry,, accompanied by the undertaker's van,, arrived about an hour after the man's death and after viewing the remains they were removed to the family residence, from which place the funeral will be held today. It is probable that an inquest will not be deemed necessary. The deceased was about 45 years of age and leaves a wife and three step-children. Until recently he had been employed at the Mollie Gibson mine. He was not a member of any of the secret orders of the city and carried no insurance upon his life. He has resided in Aspen for the past ten years and was well known and respected in this cam.
