Mahaffey was born in Union county (sic), Ohio, May 18, 1832. When seventeen years old he moved to Illinois. In 1854, in that state; he was married Miss Charlotte Allison. The next year he moved to Cherokee county (sic), Iowa. Ha enlisted August 11, 1862, in Company D, 32d Iowa Infantry, served three yean and one month, and was mustered out in September, 1865. He than moved to Ray county (sic), Mo., in 1869, where his wife died in June, 1872. Six children were born to this union, three of whom an still living - one son and two daughters, J. L. Mahaffey, who lives on the White Water river in Colorado, Sylvia A. Moore; who lives here, and Mrs. Lucy Hendry, who lives in Jewell county (sic), Kan., about thirteen miles southwest of Superior. On October 11, 1878, ha was married to Mary C. Mizner, in Calwell, Mo. There wen born to them two daughters and two sons. The oldest daughter, Addis Moriarty, lives at Lingrove, lowa, and was here for the funeral. The next is Mary Barker, of Sioux City, Iowa, Herbert Mahaffey is a railroad and runs as brakeman in South Dakota, for the Union Pacific Joe Mahaffey, the youngest son, is living in Salt Lake City, Utah. In 1874 Mr. Mahaffey moved with his family to Jewell county (sic), Kan., in 1891 he moved to Red Cloud, Neb , and in 1894 back to Iowa. In 1898 he moved to Colorado and in 1901 back to Nebraska and located in Superior, where he resided until the time of his death, which occurred September 1, 1907, at 3:15 a. m. Mr. Mahaffey had been a member of the United Brethren church (sic) since 1875. Ha said, in talking to one our Christian citizens, "Yes, it if all right." The last night he said, "I'll soon be gone and be at rest." He had been ill since last January, with ulceration of the stomach, during all of which time he suffered severely. The funeral occurred from the residence Tuesday, September 3, at 9 a. m., conducted by Rev. J. W. Embree, pastor of the M. E. church. The remains were then taken to Evergreen cemetery (sic) and laid in their last resting place, when members of the W. R. C. had been at work and with loving hands had lined the grave with flags and goldenrod, and transformed it into a thing of beauty. The floral tributes were many and beautiful, the casket being covered with flowers and draped with the American flag. Besides the sorrowing wife and children, the deceased leaves two brothers, A. M. Mahaffey, of Columbus, Neb, and J. L. Mahaffey, of Ogallalla (sic), Neb.
