Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. in the Hinman Funeral Home here for John Mallory Holmes, Jr., former resident of Crisfield, but recently of New Carrollton, Md. Officiating was the Rev. Leslie Werner, pastor of West Baltimore United Methodist Church. Burial was in Sunnyridge Memorial Park here. Mr. Holmes died June 16th in Prince Georges County Hospital, Cheverly, Md. after a short illness. He was 59 years of age. Mr. Holmes was born in Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., son of John Mallory Holmes and Margaret Tawes Holmes. His grandfather, John M. Holmes, built, and for a number of years was the minister of Mount Pleasant Methodist Church here. Mr. Holmes spent his childhood summers in Crisfield and attended school in Greenville, South Carolina. Prior to entering Johns Hopkins University, he attended Mercersburg Academy, Mercersburg, Pa. He graduated from The Johns Hopkins University with a Master's Degree in Operations Research. Lucie E. Cook of Crisfield became his wife in 1933. During World War II Mr. Holmes worked for the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company. In 1945 he opened Holmes Appliance Company in Crisfield and operated it until 1952 when he was employed by Wayne Pump Company in Salisbury. In 1963 he joined the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company as a Computer Science Specialist. He was located first in West Virginia and then at the C & P Telephone Company's headquarters in Washington, D.C. Mr. Holmes was a member of Elks Lodge No. 622, Annapolis, Md., Operations Research Society of America, and American Society for Quality Control. He is survived by his wife, Lucie E. Holmes and his son, John M. Holmes, III, Summit, New Jersey. The family suggests that as a tribute to the memory of the deceased, contributions may be made to the Somerset County Cancer Society, in care of Mrs. Robert Reynolds, Princess Anne.
