Description	:	Picture: John is the man in the middle John Marvel Bond fought in the Civil War on the side of the North, He entered service the 10th of July 1861, In the 6th Iowa Infantry Co. B at Burlington, Ia. He was possibly wounded and left for dead on the Shiloh, Tennessee battlefield and found after the battle and nursed back to health, he was reported as a deserter. Read More	Picture: John is the man in the middle John Marvel Bond fought in the Civil War on the side of the North, He entered service the 10th of July 1861, In the 6th Iowa Infantry Co. B at Burlington, Ia. He was possibly wounded and left for dead on the Shiloh, Tennessee battlefield and found after the battle and nursed back to health, he was reported as a deserter. When he was well enough, not knowing where his outfit was he went back to Corydon, Iowa and joined another Iowa Co. the 23rd Iowa Infantry Co. D the 26th of July 1862. He was in the battles of Port Gibson, Champion Hill, Milikens Bend, Fort Spanish, Vicksburg and Fort Esperanza. I believe he was wounded in the leg at Vicksburg, but not sure other wound is accounted for. He was discharged at Harrisburg, Texas the 26th of July 1865 and was said that he walked a good portion of the way back to Iowa. He was trimming a tree and fell out of the top and died the morning of June 3, 1888 from internal injuries. It was said that he lay in agony for two weeks before his death. John was a farmer, he was born in Butler Co. Pennsylvania. His wife Mary Jane VanBlaricom-Scott-Bond had a lot of trouble getting his pension and had to resort to an Attorney to finally get his pension. She was turned down originally as a deserter because of the 6th Iowa enrollment. I do have several letters written to the attorney from Mary Jane. I also have his powder horn and a large picture of him and a piece of the tree he fell from. John was married after the war to Mary Jane VanBlaricom-Scott and from this Union four children were born. They were Samuel William AKA Robert Baker, Martha Ann, Mary Katherine Mae, John Marvel.
