John met Mary who was 17 years old on a wagon train that her mother Rebecca Waltz-VanBlaricom-Stickler and stepfather John Stickler were on heading to Iowa from Ohio about 1856. She was engaged to a man named Conrad Houston at the time. They camped by a bridge in Wayne County, Iowa one night and held a dance that evening. She met and danced with John Henry Scott in 1856 and fell in love and married him September 13, 1857. John Henry Scott died of exposure during the Civil War. It seems that one morning although sick himself, set out on his horse to check the families of soldiers which was the practice then for men whom stayed home. During the afternoon a horrible blizzard came up and later that evening his horse came home without him. His wife Mary Jane VanBlaricom-Scott-Bond later to marry my great grandfather went outside the horse started pawing the ground and throwing such a fit and took off up the lane for a ways. The horse stopped and came back it repeated this several times. A neighbor who happen to be there along with Mary decided the horse wanted them to follow him. They followed the horse a couple of miles when he stopped and began pawing at a snow bank. When they dug away the snow they found John Henry very ill, they took him home and 2 weeks later he passed away probably from pneumonia. My grandfather Robert Baker Bond aka William Samuel Baker Bond once asked his mother Mary Jane why she didn't want to be buried in the same cemetery as his dad John Marvel Bond. Mary told him that she loved both husbands and could not choose between her two husbands as she had children by both and could not hurt them by choosing one father over the other.
