Mr McAllister was 91 years and 15 days old and is survived by a widow and four children. Holton Recorder, 22 August 1907, p.6 McAllister When on Tuesday, Aug. 20th, John McAllister journeyed to the home from where no traveler returns, a long and well spent life was rounded out, 92 years is far longer than the average life’s journey, yet through the chances and mischances of a long life he carried his heart in his hand like a palm branch waving all discords into peace and daily heeding the biblical injunction – All things whatsoever ye would that men should do unto you, do ye even unto them. Age sat with decent grace upon his visage, And worthily became his silver locks, He wore the mark of many, many years well spent Of virtue, truth well tried and wise experience. A pioneer of Liberty township and for years engaged in shipping stock, he had a wide circle of acquaintances who will long remember his genial companionship and his words of cheer. He was born August 5th, 1816, at Bally Castle, Antrim county, Ireland, remaining with his parents until his 21st year. He worked at various places in Ireland and Scotland until August 1847, when he visited the United States. Making a brief visit to his home in the early winter of 1848, he returned again in March of that year landing at Philadelphia, where he permanently resided until 1870. To the wife who survives him, Miss Sarah Miller, he was married Aug. 1at, 1848. Seven children were born to them, two dying in infancy and the third son, John, in January last. For sixteen years he conducted a diary and six years operated a brick yard. His brother, Adam’s, death in 1862 made him the possessor of the homestead upon which his son, Adam, now resides. Visiting Kansas in 1862 and yearly after until 1870, he grew to like the west and deeming it the better place in which to raise his family, he disposed of his property interests in Philadelphia and with his family removed to Liberty township in the spring of 1870. The wife who journeyed with him for so many years, his sons: Samuel, Adam, William, and daughter, Mrs. Martha Porterfield mourn his loss. He lived to see gathered in his home twenty-one grand children and six great grandchildren. Six grandsons were the pall-bearers. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Platz at the Liberty church and a large concourse of mourners followed the remains to their final resting place. In January 1848 he returned to his home, made a brief visit and in March 1848 came again to the states, landing at Philadelphia, which city he permanently resided in until his locating in Kansas in 1870. To the wife who survives him, Miss Sarah Miller, he was married August 1, 1848. Seven children were born of this union, two dying in infancy and one, their son John, died in January last. For sixteen years he conducted a large dairy and six years owned a brick yard. His brother Adam, a resident of western Missouri, had purchased land in Liberty township and meeting with an accident which caused his death, he was summoned to Kansas. His brother being unmarried the property came into his possession and after several visits – his first being in ’62 – he came to like the west and deeming Kansas a better place in which to raise his family than the city, he disposed of his property interests in Philadelphia and with his family came to Netawaka in 1870, and fro there journeyed to the place which has been his home since. His life companion of so many years, his sons, Samuel, Adam, William and daughter, Mrs. Martha Porterfield, mourn his loss. Twenty-one grandchildren and six great grandchildren he lived to see. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Platz at the Liberty church Thursday, August 22, and a large concourse of friends witnessed this interment. Holton Signal, 29 August 1907, p.5
