When John was still young, the family moved to Tennessee and settled in Rhea County, and moved to McMin County in about 1824. When John was still young, the family moved to Tennessee and settled in Rhea County, and moved to McMin County in about 1824. After Mary's death James remarried in 1820 to Dicy (Murphree) Ellis, a widow. James Wilson died in 1841 in McMinn County. In the court records pertaining to the probate of his estate the following letter is found: "Canton, Washington County, Indiana, Apr 4th 1846. To the administrator of my father's estate or whoever may have the care of my part of the personal property, please divide the amount equally that is coming to me. Let it be more or less & pay it to my sister Mary Long and my brother Jackson C Wilson and keep this for your receipt. John M. Wilson". John M. Wilson entered the mercantile business in Canton, Indiana around 1840. He married Elizabeth Harned in Washington County, Indiana November 22, 1842. They were the parents of Joseph H. (1844-1872) and John H. (1846-1926). Elizabeth died April 13, 1846. John then married Mary Ellen, whose last name is not known. They had one daughter, Eleanora, (1848-1850). Mary Ellen died August 27, 1850. John's third wife was Polly (Beem) Woody, a widow with two sons. They were married in Washington County, Indiana in about 1851. John and Polly were the parents of William W. (1852-1940), Sarah E. (1856-1929), George W. (1858-1860), Arabella ( b.& d. 1861) and James B. (1862-1908). John M. and Polly Wilson and their family moved to Linn County, Iowa in 1853 where (according to the Linn County History of 1878) John constructed a three-story brick building and engaged in a produce and grocery business. He accumulated some degree of personal wealth in business and land, but suffered financial losses in the Panic of 1857. By 1860 his business had become a hotel, which after his health failed, his wife Polly ran as a boarding house. Funeral home records indicate that John McClure Wilson died of apoplexy in Marion, Iowa on January 6, 1881. His wife, Polly, remained in Marion, Iowa until her death in 1908. Jim L Wilson
