Description	:	According to records found on FamilySearch, John (Joannes) was born in the Karlshausen, Rheinland region of the old kingdom of Prussia on June 15, 1822. He was Baptized on June 16, 1822. John's parents were Michaelis Meyer and Annae Mariae Zinnen. John had at least two brothers Michael (born May 1825) and Jacob (born Jan 28, 1827) and one sister Anna (born Feb 1824). Michael married Margaretha Wagner on March 16, 1852 in Karlshausen. John's parents were Michaelis Meyer and Annae Mariae Zinnen. John had at least two brothers Michael (born May 1825) and Jacob (born Jan 28, 1827) and one sister Anna (born Feb 1824). Michael married Margaretha Wagner on March 16, 1852 in Karlshausen. Jacob married Anna Catharina Mayer on Oct 2, 1855 in Karlshausen. All 3 brothers were living in Chautauqua County, New York around 1860-1865. John was in Dunkirk, Michael was in North Collins and Jacob was in Stockton (all within 35 miles of each other). John married Margaretha Laux on Jan 5, 1850 in Karlshausen, Germany. Margaret was born on Sept 6, 1829 also in Karshausen, Germany. German Catholic Church Records show that John Meyers and Margaret Laux had 2 children born in Karlshausen, Prussia: Anna Maria born in Dec 4, 1850 and Michael born in June 8, 1852. In a 1900 US Census, Margaret mentioned that she had 10 children and 3 were currently living. John and Margaret immigrated to the United States in the 1850s. They lived near Dunkirk in Chautauqua County, New York where they operated a farm. John's Brother Michael also immigrated to the United States, first settling in North Collins, Chautauqua County, New York and then moving to Ottumwa, Iowa and farmed. An 1880 Census lists Michael (age 55)and Margaret (age 52) living in Ottumwa with children John (age 23), Jacob (age 18), Renah (age 16) and Martha (age14), George (age 12) and Mary (age 8). John married Joanna Enoch. George married Margaret Mott. Jacob married Anna Mott. Rene married C.H.Strang. Michael is listed as a widower in an 1885 Census. Many of Michael's family are buried in Calvary Cemetery in Ottumwa. John's brother Jacob also immigrated to America. Farming in Stockton, Chautauqua County New York in 1860 with wife Catharine and young 2 year old daughter, Anna. An 1870 Census found Jacob (a widower) living in Ottumwa, Iowa with 12 year old daughter Anna, 9 year old Susanna, 7 year old Margrett and 5 year old Mary. An 1865 US census shows John (age 45 - a farmer) and Margretta (age 34) living in Dunkirk (on the Coast of Lake Erie) in Chautauqua County with four out of there 6 children: John (age 8-born about 1857), Michael (age 7-born about 1858), Catherine (age 6-born about 1859) and Jacob (age 1 8/12 - born about 1863) all born in Chautauqua, New York. There was no mention of Anna Maria and Michael that were born in Prussia, one would presume the 2 children died before they immigrated to America. An 1870 US Census lists John (age 49 day laborer), Margaret (age 32), John (age 15 day laborer), Mark (age 12), Catherine "Katie" (age 11) Jacob (age 8) and Macey (male [most likely Matthew] age 5) living in Ottumwa, Iowa. In an 1880 Census, Margret (age 65) is a widow living in Wapello County, Iowa with 4 children: John (age 23)(a railroad brakeman), Katie (age 18), Jacob (age 16) and Matthew (age 14). John's brother Michael and Jacob with their wives and families were also living in the Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa. In an 1885 US Census, shows Margaret (age 55) living with 2 sons Jacob (age 21) (a railroad brakeman) and Matthew (age 19) still in Ottumwa, Iowa. An 1895 Census shows Margaret (age 65) living with son Matt (a lineman age 28) and his wife Bessie (age 25) and two of their children: Charles (age 3) and Carl (age 1). Matt and Bessie and family moved to Montana. A 1900 US Census lists John's wife Margaret a widow (age 72) living alone in Ottumwa, Iowa. Census states 3 out of her 10 children are still living: Katie, Jacob and Matt. Margaret Laux Meyers Scwartz died on Jan 14, 1902 in Ottumwa and is buried in Calvary Cemetery. Son John Jr died betwwen 1880 and 1900. Son Mark died between 1870 and 1900. Son Matt Meyers (1866-1941) moved to Anaconda, Montana and worked for the Smelter as a boiler maker. Matt died in 1941 and is buried in Anaconda. Son Jacob (1863-1942) (find a grave memorial #125388527) moved to Colorado and is buried at Fairmount Cemetery in the Denver area. He worked and retired from the railroad. Daughter Katherine (1860-1913) moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming where she married Peter W Schmidt. They later moved to Butte and Anaconda, Montana where she died on April 6, 1913 and is buried at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Anaconda. I am still researching where John Meyers died and is buried. From the Census reports, John was alive in the 1870 Census and not in the 1880 census; likely John died between 1871 and 1879 in Ottumwa, Iowa and most likely is also buried in Calvary Cemetery. There was a fire which led to the destruction of many records.
