The elder Canady was born 1796 in Barnwell District, SC while his wife Sarah, was born 1800 in Georgia. John and Sarah Canady and children were in Bryan Co., GA in the 1820 & 1830 censuses and in Columbia Co., FL (now Baker) censuses of 1840 & 1850, and the son John M. was living with his parents in 1850, age 23 years, unmarried. John Milledge Canady was married in 1855 to Sarah Ann Howell, born March 10, 1837, in Georgia. They had twelve children. Mr. Canady lived in the Moniac district of Charlton Co., which is just across the St. Marys River from Baker Co., FL, so that several of the children after marriage lived in Florida instead of Georgia. He was a prominent citizen of his county in his day. He served one term, 1884-1885, as Representative from his county. He died Sept. 7, 1895, and his wife June 2, 1898; they were buried in the North Prong Cemetery over in Baker Co., FL. Their home was located about 2 1/2 miles south of the railroad stop known as Moniac, Charlton County. Nearby is the old Canady Cemetery where his parents are buried in unmarked graves. The elder Canady served four or more enlistments in the militia in the Indian War, 1836-1842.
