He had been in apparent good health and was just leaving the yard to drive to Auburn to visit in the home of another daughter, Mrs. Max Leonard, when his sudden death resulted from a heart attack. Mr. Pope was local agent here for the Burlington railroad for 20 years from 1917 to 1937, when they moved to Auburn where he remained in the service of that line until his retirement on March 15, 1947. He took an active interest in public affairs and was mayor of Nelson from 1932 to 1937. In March, 1947, Mr. and Mrs. Pope again made their residence here, and during much of this time he has made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Wehrman. Mrs. Pope passed away on September 11, 1947. Surviving are a son, Irvin L. Pope of Union, Colo.; and two daughters, Mrs. Florence Wehrman of Nelson, and Mrs. Virginia Leonard of Auburn. Funeral services for Mr. Pope will be held Friday afternoon at two o'clock in the Nelson Methodist church (sic), with interment in the Nelson cemetery (sic). The Nelson Gazette, Thursday, March 16, 1950 John Milton Pope, son of Clement and Maryland Scott Pope, was born at Gower, Missouri, September 28, 1847, and passed away suddenly at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C.E. Wehrman, northwest of Nelson, Nebraska, at one o'clock Wednesday afternoon, March 15, 1950, just as he was leaving to visit a daughter at Auburn, Nebraska. His age was 74 years, 5 months and 15 days. He spent his boyhood at Troy, Kansas. He graduated from a business college in St. Joseph, Mo., and became a station agent for the railroad. On August 21, 1901, he was united in marriage with Edith Ellen Hall at Spring Ranch, Nebraska. To them were born a son, Irvin L. Pope, of Union, Colo., and two daughters, Mrs. Florence Wehrman, and Mrs. Virginia Leonard, of Auburn, Nebraska. They lived a number of years in Daykin, Nebraska, and in Rulo, Nebraska. They moved to Nelson in 1917 where he was local agent for the Burlington railroad for 20 years. In 1937 they moved to Auburn, Nebraska, where he was station agent for 10 years, retiring March 15, 1947, just three years to a day prior to his death. Upon his retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Pope returned to their home in Nelson. Mrs. Pope passed away a few months later on September 11, 1947. Her passing was also sudden, she having been active the day of her death. Mr. Pope was proud of the pin given him by the Burlington for 45 years of faithful service. He served as mayor of Nelson from April 5, 1932 until November 29, 1937 when they moved to Auburn. He was initiated into the Masonic Order at Rulo, and was a Past Master of Nelson Lodge No. 77. He united in membership with the Methodist church at Rulo, later transferring his membership to the Nelson Methodist church (sic). The last few months he had been accompanied by one of his grandsons at the church services. He was in attendance at church the Sunday before his passing. He was one of a family of eight children. The oldest brother, Clement, died in childhood. Surviving, in addition to his three children and six grandchildren, are two brothers and four sisters: C.J. Pope of Troy, Kansas; George Pope, of Bendena, Kansas; Mrs. Anna Nelson, Troy, Kansas; Mrs. Grace Hill, Joplin, Mo.; Mrs. Lulu Ford, Santa Monica, Calif.; and Mrs. Florence Paige, of Troy, Kansas. John, as he was known by his friends, practiced his Christianity day by day and he was held in respect by his fellowmen. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon March 17 at the Nelson Methodist church (sic) by the Rev. E.B. Stewart, pastor. Masonic burial rites were conducted by Arthur Scism of Edgar, Nebraska. Members of Nelson Lodge No. 77 attended the services in a body. Two hymns, "One Sweetly Solemn Thought" and "Beautiful Isle," were sung by Mrs. W.L. Portwood, Mrs. Jas. F. Murphy, Joe Ferebee, Jr. and Roy Brookhart. Mrs. H.H. Hite played the accompaniments. The casket bearers were members of the Masonic Order of Nelson: Loy Davidson, Wray Wehrman, Homer Wehrman, Homer Wehrman, Jr., Alvie Bueoy and Frank Korbelik, Jr. Burial was made in the Nelson cemetery (sic).
