John was born Sept. 13, 1920, in Harlowton to Ralph Deforest Mast and Shirley Lucile Anderson (Mast). John's father died from pneumonia suddenly when John was 10 years old. John was born Sept. 13, 1920, in Harlowton to Ralph Deforest Mast and Shirley Lucile Anderson (Mast). John's father died from pneumonia suddenly when John was 10 years old. Shirley moved her sons Ralph and John to Butte, shortly after her husband's death. John attended school with his younger brother in Butte until he quit high school in 1937 to help his mother with expenses and went to work in the Civilian Conservation Corps camp in Lolo. On April 11, 1938, he volunteered for service in the Navy and continued his service through World War II and retired from the Navy on May 1, 1967. John acquired his high school diploma while in the Navy in 1952. His mother married Cecil Gaylord Clark and Cecil adopted John and brother Ralph in March 1938. John for many years was in charge of the engine room for several different destroyers and carrier's in the Navy and retired at the rank of chief machinist mate. During his service in the Navy, he met Angela Bakun from Anaconda and after a short three months of courtship, they married on Sept. 21, 1947. While John was in the Navy, Angela moved from the East Coast to the West Coast as her husband was assigned to different ports of call. Twice in John's life, while married, he was gone for a year at a time while his ship was on a cruise around the world for the Navy. In 1960 John moved his family to Great Falls and accepted a job as a civil servant for the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Shop for Malmstrom Air Force Base. He became the foreman of the shop in later years and retired from the position in September 1985. During this time John was active in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts with his sons and became a primary member of the Lewis and Clark District Camping Committee until 1973. John and Angela continued to live in Great Falls until April 2003. John was diagnosed with lung cancer in April this year and decided to move to Boise with his son for the chemotherapy treatments. He died peacefully in bed and is doing work for the Lord now. A soldier, a husband, a father, a neighbor and a great friend, he did all of them well and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He leaves behind his wife Angela, sons Thomas M. Mast in Alice Springs, Australia, and John C. Mast of Boise. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Croxford and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory, 1307 Central Ave., Great Falls. The Rev. Scott Basolo, of Hailey, Idaho, will officiate. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. Monday in S.H. Sloga Section, Upper Hill Cemetery in Anaconda. It is the family's wish that memorials can be a favorite charity. The family suggests the Mountain States Tumor Institute, 100 E. Idaho Street, Boise 83712, or the Boy Scouts of America in Great Falls. PUBLISHED: The Montana Standard, 29 Apr 2003
