Mr. Nielson, who was pierced by the draw bar of the train's pilot, died at the scene of the accident. Mr. Carpenter died a few hours later at the Akron hospital. Mr. Carpenter was driving the car which was shoved about 200 feet before the train could stop, according to Coroner Charles Vander Ploeg. Mr. Carpenter was taken to the hospital by Mr. and Mrs. James McKettrick and Joel Burnight. The two victims were neighbors who lived southwest of Chatsworth in Union county. Grocerties, purchased in Hawarden shortly before the accident, were strewn along the track. Mrs. G.H. Schafer and her grandson, Pat Kelley, of Chatsworth witnessed the accident. Funeral services for Mr. Nielson were held at the Barnard Funeral home here at 2:30 Sunday afternoon with Rev. Milton Schaper of the Methodist church in charge. Burial was in Grace Hill cemetery. Mr. Nielson was born at Londer Bjert, Denmark, February 18, 1881. He came to America in 1904, locating on a farm in Union County. He spent the rest of his life in this vicinity with the exception of a year when he returned to his native land. Following the death of Carl Nielson, he helped care for his two small children and later he married Mrs. Ruby Nielson. His wife preceded him in death in 1922. He is survived by two step-children, Mrs. Cecil Van Fleet of Cedar rapids and Paul Nielson who lived with him. When still in Denmark he was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Modern Woodman. Out of town relatives who came to attend the funeral included Mrs. Cecil Van Fleet of Cedar Rapids, Nels Christiansen and Mrs. Ludwig Peterson of Eagle Grove, Mrs. Serena Myers of Boone, Iowa, Elmer Christiansen of Pocahontas and Howard Searless and family of Akron.
