Mr. Nies had been in poor health for more than a year and his decline during the past two or three months was rapid, resisting the treatment of his physician and the tender care of his sons and daughters. Dilatation of the heart and dropsy, contributed to by senility, are given as the causes of death. John Nies was born March 16, 1834, eighteen miles west of Strasbourg, Alsace-Lorraine. At that time the country belonged to France. It was regained by Germany in the war of 1870. On December 14, 1853, Mr. Nies sailed by way of Havre for the United States, and his passport, bearing that date, was signed by French officials. His passage to America consumed nearly fifty-five days and he landed at New York where he spent two or three months, going to Bowmansville thence to Buffalo. Before leaving his native land he had served three years as a tailor¹s apprentice and for a year he worked at this trade in Buffalo. At Bowmansville he learned the carpenter trade. Until the breaking out of the Civil war he worked during summers as carpenter and each winter found employment as a tailor. At the former trade he received from fifty to seventy-five cents per day and at the latter his daily wage averaged about fifty cents. He also worked for a time on a farm near Bowmansville and received pay amounting to seven dollars per month. John Nies was married to Miss Catherine Willyoung on June 14, 1858, at Lancaster, N.Y. To them were born nine children, two dying in infancy. The surviving children are Mrs. Cordelia Wilson, of Oakdale, Mrs. Mary Terwilliger of Wakefield, J.H. Nies of Meadow Grove, Mrs. Julia Trube of Plainview, George E. Nies of Oakdale, S.I. Nies of Neligh, Mrs. Nettie Bickford of Oakdale. The wife and mother died October 7, 1911. On October 11, 1864, Mr. Nies enlisted in Co. H., 187th N.Y. volunteer infantry, serving until discharged on July 1, 1865, from the Army of the Potomac. He took part in the battles of Hatches Run, Five Forks, and Appomatox Court House, and was present at the surrender of Lee, marching all night to be present on that occasion. After his discharge from the army he returned to Bowmansville and farmed and worked at the carpenter trade until April 1867, at which date he came to Dakota county, Nebraska. Here he purchased 160 acres of land and farms and worked as a carpenter until the spring of 1878 when he sold his land, and on March 18 of that year came to Antelope County. He selected this vicinity as his home and located a short distance northwest of Oakdale, purchasing a 160 acres from A.M. Tousley and 160 acres from Mary Clark. Later he made timber claim filing on 160 acres south of the farm now owned by H.L. Ofe. These holdings were increased by the purchase of 480 acres in the same vicinity, making a tract of 960 acres, which he owned at the time of his death. During the early years of his residence here he worked at odd jobs and aided by his good wife and children carried on as extensive farming operations as his means would permit. All the early buildings on the farm were erected by Mr. Nies. He devoted considerable attention to breeding and shipping cattle and in this he was very successful. In May 1899 Mr. Nies gave up farm life and removed to Oakdale. Here he entered at once into the life of the community and took an active part in public affairs. He served as a member of the board of trustees for several years and was the chairman of that body from 1902-1906. He was president of the Antelope County Bank until he disposed of his holdings to Geo. F. Boyd, and he was a stockholder in the Oakdale Heat & Light Co. In public affairs Mr. Nies was faithful to every trust reposed in him, and in his dealings with his fellowmen he was honorable and just, rendering exact service and demanding only which was rightfully his. Those who knew him most intimately bear testimony of the highest character to his worth as a citizen, husband and father. He leaves his children the legacy of a good name and the memory of a life spent in steady adherence to duty. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o¹clock at the home. Rev G.W. Snyder will preach the sermon. The services at the grave will be under the auspices of the G.A.R. Interment will be made in the Oakdale cemetery.
