Read More	Lake City Graphic, Lake City, Iowa May 30, 1901 OBITUARY The funeral of the late John Oxenford took place on Friday, May 24th, 1901, The remains wee taken from his late residence in Jackson township to the Cottonwood church, where services were conducted by Ref. J. Roney of the Baptist church, Lake City. The Masonic society attended in a body and formed in procession marching to the church and afterward to the cemetery where the burial service was held according to the forms of the order. A large concourse of friends and acquaintances were present to pay their last tribute of respect to the memory of the deceased and to show their sympathy for the bereaved family. John Oxenford was born at Bicker, Lincolnshire, England, April 10th, 1821. Came to America in 1842 and settled in Michigan. On January 28th, 1853, he was married to Miss Lucy A. French, and in 1856 moved to Iowa and lived on his homestead at Lake City. His wife died June 6th, 1873. On May 16th, 1883, he was married to Mrs. Sarah Butrick who survives him. In 1858 he and his brother William bought a grist mill and land along Coon river in Jackson township, and worked in partnership for 38 years. He died at his home May 22d, 1901, after several months of suffering uncomplainingly endured, at the age of 80 years, 1 month and 12 days, leaving a wife, four children and fourteen grandchildren to mourn his departure. John Oxenford took the Masonic degrees in Jeptha lodge No. 201, Grant City, Iowa, in the spring of 1867, demitted (sic) from there in 1868 and with S. H. Richardson, Robert Shidler, Wm. Oxenford, Christian Smith, H.H. Sifford, Josiah Lumpkin, Jas. Fleece and J. J. Hutchison founded the first Masonic lodge in Calhoun county, Zerrrubbbel No. 240(?), at Lake City, which was instituted July 4, 1868, of which Mr. Oxenford was a charter member and its first Junior Deacon. He continued as an honored member to the time of his death. The funeral of John Oxenford, Sr. occurred Friday, May 24, at 3 p.m. Rev. Roney preached the sermon but the Masons had special charge of the services. The church was more than filled with his friends and old neighbors. He leaves to mourn him his wife, two sons and two daughters.
