Mathews, 89-year-old pioneer resident of Cedar county, died at his home in Tipton at 5 o'clock Sunday morning. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church this afternoon at 3 o'clock, the Rev. J. Mathews Tipton--John P. Mathews, 89-year-old pioneer resident of Cedar county, died at his home in Tipton at 5 o'clock Sunday morning. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church this afternoon at 3 o'clock, the Rev. J. B. Ackman, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the Masonic cemetery. Mr. Mathews, who was born on April 1, 1842, was the oldest native born citizen in Cedar county. He lived on a farm four miles south of Tipton until 1903, when he with his family moved to Tipton. On Jan. 12, 1871, Mr. Mathews married Miss Maria Ingman, who preceded him in death on April 4, 1917. One daughter, Martha, died Dec. 22, 1915. The survivors are one daughter, Mrs. John Bolton, one son, Lewis Mathews, both of Tipton; two grandchildren, Rogers Bolton of Tipton and Mrs. Dorothy Phillips of Waterloo; three great grandchildren, John William Bolton and Marilynn Suzanne Bolton of Tipton, and Martha Joan Phillips of Waterloo. A nephew of Mr. Mathews, William G. Mathews, who was taken into the Mathews home when he was 5 days old, preceded his uncle in death on Sept. 3, 1930.
