On February 7, 1941, John was married to Evelyn Beerbaum in Santa Monica, CA. On February 7, 1941, John was married to Evelyn Beerbaum in Santa Monica, CA. Following their marriage, the young couple returned to Norfolk, where John was called to serve his country less than a month after their wedding. Evelyn lived in Norfolk while John attended basic training, and later served for 4.5 years in the Army Air Corps in North Africa during the height of World War II. Throughout the duration of his time serving in North Africa, John was unable to see his young bride, until returning home after his Honorable Discharge in 1946. John and Evelyn were each other's inspiration to make it through such a trying time of almost five years apart, and this union would remain strong for 53 years, until Evelyn's passing, and was blessed with two children, John and Mary. Upon returning from the service, John worked for Dudley's Laundry Service and Norfolk Awning Company, before becoming a sales representative for Morton Salt Company for 33 years, until retiring in 1984. John was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church-Sacred Heart Parish in Norfolk, NE., where he served as an Usher for many years. He also was a life-time member of the VFW and American Legion in Norfolk, NE., where he was an active member, serving in various offices throughout the years. John enjoyed woodworking and golfing. He was also a member of the Norfolk (NE.) Country Club. Following the death of his wife, Evelyn, John continued to live in the family home until joining The Meadows family in July of 2007, where he resided until his passing on Sunday, September 23, 2012. John is survived by: son, John (Barbara) Skiff of Wahoo, Nebraska; daughter, Mary (Charles) Coe of Gypsum, Colorado; grandchildren, Michael (Megan) Skiff, Kristina (Brian) Skiff-Mazza, and Zachary Coe; great-grandchildren, Delaney Mazza, Emery Mazza, and Breckyn Mazza and a host of relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by: wife, Evelyn Skiff; parents, Edward and Christine Skiff; sisters, Stella, Marie, and Mabel and brothers Bill, Cliff, and Erdman "Eppy". Interment was in the Prospect Hill Cemetery in Norfolk, NE., with Military Honors conducted by VFW Post 1644 and American Legion Post 16, both of Norfolk.
