Description	:	John P. Hoskinson, 49, died Sunday afternoon while driving his car on a country road about two miles northwest of Oskaloosa. He had an apparent heart attack. The car went into a milo (sorghum) pasture adjacent to the road after Mr. Hoskinson was stricken, but did not overturn. Mr. Hoskinson was editor and publisher of the Oskaloosa Independent, a weekly newspaper at Oskaloosa, and the Winchester Star and Nortonville News. He was born March 29, 1919, at Oskaloosa in Jefferson County, where he spent most of his life. He served overseas with the 25th Division in the Army during World War II. He was a member of the United Methodist Church at Oskaloosa and was past master of Oskaloosa Lodge No. 14, Af & AM, and was past patron of Chapter No. 62 of Order of Easter Star at Oskaloosa. He was a member of Chapter 9 of Royal Arch Masons at Oskaloosa and was a member of the Commandery in Topeka. He also was a member of the Kansas Press Assn., and National Newspaper Assn. Mr. Hoskinson had been employed by the Oskaloosa Independent for several years before he purchased the newspaper in 1958. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Hoskinson, at home; a son, Hal Hoskinson, at home; a daughter, Jane Hoskinson, at home; a brother, Robert Hoskinson, Kansas City, Mo., and two sisters, Mrs. Russell Montgomery, 1184 Collins, Topeka, and Mrs. Bill Garrett, Route 3, Lawrence. Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Oskaloosa United Methodist Church. Oskaloosa Lodge No. 14, Af & AM, conducted graveside services at Pleasant View Cemetery at Oskaloosa. Hampton Funeral Home at Oskaloosa was in charge of arrangements. John Patrick Hoskinson was born March 29, 1919, in Oskaloosa, Jefferson County, Kansas. He was the son of John Hoskinson and Effie Segraves. He worked for John W. Roberts, publisher of the Oskaloosa Independent newspaper, beginning as a printer's devil when he was in high school. He had a lovely baritone singing voice and described himself as "the only regular member of the Ladies' Aid Society," where he often sang when he was in high school. He served in the U.S. Army 25th "Tropic Lightning" Division, 64th Field Artillery, on Luzon during World War II, earning the rank of 1st Lieutenant. The 25th participated in the liberation of the Philippine Islands and took part in the occupation of Japan. After the war, John married Mary Roberts in 1946. He attended the University of Kansas on the GI Bill, studying journalism and vocal music. In 1958 he purchased the Oskaloosa Independent and became its publisher. He also purchased the Winchester Star and Nortonville News and published them as a combined weekly newspaper. The Winchester Star was one of the last papers in Kansas to use handset type in its body copy. John was an avid fisherman who loved to explore the local woods and rivers.
