John was born Jan. 2, 1937, in Dunlap, Iowa and was the fifth son of Francis Cecil and Eva (Merritt) Smith. John graduated from St. Joseph's School in Dunlap in 1954 and was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Following graduation he enlisted in the U. S. Army, serving stateside and in Germany. He operated his own bulldozing business for a number of years and then joined the U.S. D.A. Soil Conservation Service, working in Logan and later in Denison. He had served 27 years. Jon also assisted the American Legion on Memorial Day, raising and lowering flags at the cemetery. On July 28, 1962, he married Judy Howard. To this union three children were born: Lisa Marie (Mrs. Kevin) Fouts of Waterloo, Jill Janene of Morningside College in Sioux City, and John Patrick Jr. of Dunlap. As a young man he was known for his singing voice and sang at many weddings including his own. For a while he served as song leader for Mass. Survivors include his wife, Judy; two daughters, Lisa Fouts and her husband Kevin, and Jill Smith; and one son, John; three brothers, Ed and his wife, Monica, of Fort Calhoun, Nebr.; Jerry and his wife, Mary Lou, of Utica, Ill.; and Paul and his wife, Jan, of Dunlap; and one niece and nine nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant bother, Francis Cecil Jr. John was a quiet man of few words, but his family and friends understood how he felt. He had a strong love for the outdoors, particularly for fishing, trapping and hunting. Services were held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Friday, April 19, at 10:30 a.m. . The Rev. Dale Koster of Lohrville, a close friend, and the Rev. Fred Reischl officiated. Organist was Fran Klein. Honorary bearers were nephews Craig and Kevin Smith. Active bearers were nephews, James E. Smith, Larry Smith, Bob Smith, Mike Smith, David Smith, Lynn Smith and Steve Smith. Honor guard and military service were provided by Dunlap American Legion Post 224. Interment was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery of Dunlap with arrangements by the Fouts Funeral Home.
