Description	:	John Paul Barker, 91, passed away on November 15, 2019. He was born May 28, 1928 in Greenville, SC to the late Eula Smith Barker and John Benjamin Barker. A graduate of North Greenville College, he served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force after being appointed by Senator Strom Thurmond for officer school. He was born May 28, 1928 in Greenville, SC to the late Eula Smith Barker and John Benjamin Barker. A graduate of North Greenville College, he served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force after being appointed by Senator Strom Thurmond for officer school. He retired as a civil engineer from the Department of Transportation after 30 years of service. While attending North Greenville College he met his wife of 60 years, Florence Virginia Dillard and was married in January of 1949. His main hobby of 40 years was as a race car driver where he made the car number 555 prominent on the local dirt track racing circuit with over 100 wins against the likes of Ralph Earnhardt, David Pearson and Fire Ball Roberts. He was a member of Mensa, with the intellectual ability that afforded him to be a civil engineer, surveyor, carpenter, electrician, plumber, mechanic and an avid reader. In 1982, he led the renovation of McKinney Chapel in Sunset, SC. In his career, he was the site engineer for Highway 11, Highway 25 into NC and I-385. He was a mason at the masonic lodge at Brandon 279. Later in life, he enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and researching family genealogy. He is survived by his sister, Miriam Barker Summers; his children, Patricia Jean Sanchez, John Jeffery (Juanita) Barker and Jennie Renee (Blake) Castor; his seven grandchildren, Rick (Thelma) Melton, Julian (Jessica) Barker, Gilbert Sanchez, Jessica Castor, Kelli Sanchez, Luke Barker and Cameron Castor; eight great grand-children and preceded in death by his wife Florence Virginia Dillard Barker and sister Alleene Barker (Hugh) Crawley. His family would like to express their gratitude to Delaine and Buddy Taylor for loving care of 13 years of both Virginia and Paul, and his other caregivers, Pat Dockins, Veronica Dorsey and Jeannie Stratton. Interment will be held in Graceland Cemetery
