Shaffer died at his home in Berrien Center Saturday, Sept. 21, and the funeral service was held at the South Berrien Center church Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Trostel officiating. Shaffer died at his home in Berrien Center Saturday, Sept. 21, and the funeral service was held at the South Berrien Center church Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Trostel officiating. Burial was made in the cemetery adjoining the church. Mr. Shaffer was 70 years of age and had resided in Berrien Center the past 50 years. He was a carpenter by trade and helped to build many of the homes in the village where he lived. He was a kind, loving husband and father and as a neighbor was always willing and ready to lend a helping hand in time of sickness and death and will be greatly missed in the community. He was united in marriage with Emma J. Webster, at Berrien Center, Jan. 16, 1872, who with six daughters--Mrs. Chester Murphy. Mrs. Claude Iliff, Mrs. Geo. Michael and Mrs. Herbert Cauffman of Dowagiac; Mrs. Jack Love of Montana, Mrs. Arthur Brenner of Berrien Center and one son Lyle, at home, survive. The surviving brothers are: Uriah of Berrien Center, Coon of South Bend, and William of Walter, Okla. The son of Joshua & Mary (Peck) Shaffer, in 1850 he lived with his family in Silver Spring Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. 1860 Census: Upper Allen, Cumberland, Pennsylvania J. Shaffer (Joshua), age 57, carpenter; M. Shaffer (Mary), age 47; M. Shaffer (Catherine Maria), age 14; J. Shaffer (John Phillip), age 12; E. Shaffer (Sarah Elizabeth), age 9; C. Shaffer (Conrad), age 7; S. Shaffer (Charles Zephania), age 17. In 1870 he is living in Berrien Twp., Berrien Co., Michigan. John was working for Jacob Brenner. A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, July 18, 1864, overstating his age by two years, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg July 21 as a private with Co. I, 195th Pennsylvania Infantry, a 100-day regiment. On September 4, he re-enlisted in the field at Monocacy Junction, Frederick County, Maryland, with the one-year organization of the 195th Pennsylvania, mustered as a private with Co. B, and honorably discharged with his company June 21, 1865. He married Emma Jane Webster January 16, 1872, in Berrien County, Michigan, and fathered Mary (b. 05/24/73 - married Chester Murphy), Lyle Conrad (b. 04/08/75), Alice Ray "Allie" (b. 01/24/78 - married Claude D. Iliff), Roxie Ellen "Tot" (07/13/80 - married Samuel Levi King and Jack Leroy Love), Maude Grace (b. 04/14/83 - married George N. Michael), Ethel Blanche (b. 04/27/87 - married Herbert Samuel Cauffman), and Hazel Gladys (b. 01/28/92 - married Arthur Brenner). Middle name may be Peck or Phillip depending on where you find his information. His mother's maiden name was Peck so Peck is a possibility. Another family member indicates the name is Phillip.
