Mrs. Emma Shaffer, who had spent practically her whole life in Berrien Center and was well known through-out this vicinity, passed away at her home in that village Thursday, June 5, at the age of 68 years, 3 months and 22 days. Mrs. Emma Shaffer, who had spent practically her whole life in Berrien Center and was well known through-out this vicinity, passed away at her home in that village Thursday, June 5, at the age of 68 years, 3 months and 22 days. Death followed several years of ill-health, although she had been confined to her bed but a short while. Emma Jane Webster was born on a farm just west of Berrien Center February 13th, 1856 and spent her childhood there. In 1872, she was united in marriage with John P. Shaffer, who preceded her in death six years ago. To this union were born eight children-Lyle C. Shaffer, who resides at home, Mrs. Chester Murphy, Mrs. Claude Iliff, Mrs. Geo. Michael and Mrs. Herbert Cauffman of Dowagiac, Mrs. Jack Love of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Arthur Brenner of Berrien Center, all of whom survive, and Leslie Claudine, who died in infancy. Besides her children, she leaves to mourn her loss, eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Although in poor health for the past five years, Mrs. Shaffer has kept up her household duties, bearing her suffering patiently and cheerfully. she was a faithful and loving wife, a devoted mother and a kind neighbor and will be greatly missed by her many friends. Funeral services were held at the Union church Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. T. Nelson of Baroda. Many beautiful floral pieces bespoke the esteem in which the deceased was held by her friends and acquaintances.
