Description	:	John Peter "Jim" Kirchen was the second child born to Nicholas Kirchen and Susanna Siren. Jim was born in the town of St. Donatus, Jackson County, Iowa - a community of immigrants from Luxembourg. Both of his parents were born in Luxembourg and immigrated to America: Susanna arrived in 1847 and Nicholas arrived in 1856. Jim was born in the town of St. Donatus, Jackson County, Iowa - a community of immigrants from Luxembourg. Both of his parents were born in Luxembourg and immigrated to America: Susanna arrived in 1847 and Nicholas arrived in 1856. They married in St Donatus in 1859 and had four children: Maria (1860-1878), Jim (1863-1954), Susan (1864-1946), and an infant son who died after one day (1865). His mother died in January 1866, just two weeks after giving birth to the infant brother who died. At this time Jim Kirchen was just two years old. Jim's father, Nicholas, was a wagon maker in St. Donatus. After the death of his wife, he was left with three young children to care for. A year and a half after the death of his wife, he married Anna Marie Pull. Nicholas and Anna Marie had six more children in St. Donatus, three of whom died as infants. Unfortunately, Nicholas became ill with tuberculosis and died in 1877, leaving his widow to care for six children. At this time, Jim Kirchen was 14 years old. His older sister, Maria, died six months later in 1878. Shortly after 1880, Jim Kirchen went to Caledonia, Minnesota, to live with Jacob Bouquet, the husband of his deceased Aunt Margaret, sister of his father Nicholas Kirchen. Like Nicholas Kirchen, Jacob Bouquet was a wagon maker, and young Jim Kirchen learned carpentry and wagon making from him. Jim Kirchen moved to Adams County, Nebraska around 1884, shortly after his 21st birthday. There he worked as a carpenter, building houses and barns in the Juniata area. He joined others who had moved to Adams County from St Donatus, Iowa, many of them coming to take advantage of homestead land. On April 14, 1891 Jim Kirchen married Barbara Kneip at the Assumption Catholic Church. Unfortunately, Barbara died three years later in 1894. After the death of his wife, Jim acquired homestead land near Venango, Nebraska. He then returned to Juniata, where he married Susan Marie Goedert on April 29, 1896 at the Assumption Catholic Church. Following their marriage, Jim and Susan Kirchen moved to Bingham, Utah, because Jim's cousin John Joseph Kirchen was living there. Jim worked in a smelter plant in Bingham in order to save money to make a down payment on a farm in Juniata, Adams County, Nebraska. They returned to Juniata before 1900. Jim and Susan Kirchen's first child was born in 1901, but he contracted smallpox as an infant and died at the age of 8 months. Jim also contracted smallpox, but recovered. In 1904, Jim and Susan Kirchen had another son, Benedict Nicholas Kirchen. Jim Kirchen had built a new house on his land in Juniata, and the house was completed shortly before baby Ben was born in June, 1904. Jim and Susan Kirchen lived on their farm in Juniata, Nebraska for many years. Jim's wife, Susan, died in 1937, and a few years later Jim sold the farm and moved into Hastings to live with his son Ben and Ben's wife Pauline. He lived to the age of 91, and died one month after his great-granddaughter was born. Jim's son, Ben, reported this conversation Jim had in his later years with his cousin, August Heuertz. August said, "Jim, I think we will have to take our hide to market pretty soon." Jim replied, "I think we will be docked a little when we come."
