Description	:	Susan Marie Goedert was the fourth child born to Nicholas Goedert II and Anna (Adams) Goedert, immigrants from Luxembourg. In 1874, when she was only six weeks old, she moved with her family from Dubuque County, Iowa to a new homestead in Dawson County, Nebraska. On the way to the homestead, Susie's three older siblings became seriously ill with diphtheria, and the two oldest children died after reaching Dawson County (Mary, age 7, and Nicholas, age 5). Read More	Susan Marie Goedert was the fourth child born to Nicholas Goedert II and Anna (Adams) Goedert, immigrants from Luxembourg. In 1874, when she was only six weeks old, she moved with her family from Dubuque County, Iowa to a new homestead in Dawson County, Nebraska. On the way to the homestead, Susie's three older siblings became seriously ill with diphtheria, and the two oldest children died after reaching Dawson County (Mary, age 7, and Nicholas, age 5). The two children were buried in unmarked graves on the farm in Dawson County. Susie's older brother, John David (1871-1962) survived diphtheria because of the care of his aunt Katherine (Thinnes) Adams. It was believed that Susie did not because ill because she was a nursing baby, protected by her mother's immunity. The homestead in Dawson County was between Lexington and Overton. Susie's father, Nicholas Goedert II built a sod house and farmed his land, but there were two very bad years when grasshoppers ate all of the crops. Nicholas fulfilled his commitment to improve the land and was awarded the deed by the U.S. Government in 1879. However, the family moved to Adams County, Nebraska by 1880 and Nicholas sold his farm in Dawson County to his brother, Peter Goedert. The family stayed in Adams County and Nicholas continued farming there. Susie Goedert grew up in Adams County, in the Roseland area. She married local Juniata farmer John Peter "Jim" Kirchen in 1896. Jim Kirchen's parents were also originally from Luxembourg. They had a son in 1901, Nicholas Edward Kirchen, but sadly, he died of smallpox as an 18-month old infant. Their second son, Benedict Nicholas "Ben" Kirchen, was born in 1904 and lived to be 101 years old. Ben was born in the farm house in Juniata that had just been built by his father. The Kirchen family lived and farmed in Juniata for many years. Jim and Susie Kirchen also took in a foster daughter, Viola Ricken, who had been living with Susie's mother (Anna Adams Goedert) in Hastings. When Anna died in 1907, Viola had no home, so Jim and Susie took her in as a foster daughter and older foster sister to their son Ben. Susie and Jim had a strong faith and were active in the Assumption Catholic Church. Susie enjoyed her grandchildren, son and daughter of Ben Kirchen and his wife, Madge Fye. Susie died in Hastings in 1937.
