Fowler, 87, Civil war veteran and former labor leader, died in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Alice McConnell, in West fifth street today after a month's illness. J. Q. Fowler Dies; Aged 87 Civil War Veteran, Labor Leader Succumbs. John Q. A. Fowler, Civil war veteran and retired furniture dealer and architect, died in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Alice McConnell 118 West Fifth street, today at 9:45 a.m. Mr. Fowler's death leaves nine surviving members of the General Lyon post, Grand Army of the Republic. He was active in union labor circles and was one of the organizers of the Trades and Labor council, the Knights of Labor, local No. 1853, the Builders' assembly and the Liberty assembly, a woman's pottery workers' association. He was a former secretary - treasurer of the Brotherhood of Carpenters, which he also helped to organize. Mr. Fowler was born October 31, 1844, in Hancock county, W. Va., a son of the late William and Anna Fowler. He enlisted in the Union army in Columbiana county August 9, 1862 and was mustered into service at Camp Massillon in Company A 115th regiment, under Colonel H. R. Hill. He was honorably discharged at Murfreesboro, Tenn., on June 22, 1865. He took up the carpentry trade at the age of 17 years. He came to East Liverpool in 1866 when he aided in the organization of the Hanley - Hall Lumber company and later purchased the McIntosh Brothers Lumber yard here, of which he was secretary - treasurer for two years. He was later engaged in the grocery and feed business in the Diamond. After a few years in Canton he returned here and conducted a grocery business until 1892, where he retired. He was a charter member of the General Lyon post, G. A. R., and a member of the Odd Fellows, Red Men and the Boys in Blue. He was a democrat in politics. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. McConnell; one son, W. S. Fowler Jr., of East Liverpool; one brother, R. Patterson Fowler of East Palestine; seven grand children and three great - grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the home of his daughter in West Fifth street, in charge of Rev. J. F. Dimit, pastor of the Methodist Protestant church, assisted by J. A. Armstrong of Wellsville, chaplain of General Lyon post. Burial will be made in the Riverview cemetery.
