John was born September 21, 1934 in O'Neill, NE to Archie and Mary(Pendergast)Bowen. He grew up at O'Neill and graduated from O'Neill High School. He attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and Southern Methodist University in Texas. He earned his Masters Degree from Wayne State College at Wayne, NE. John served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. John married Carlene Nissen on May 26, 1957 and they divorced in 1998. He moved to Fremont in 1970. John was the band director at Plainview School in Plainview, NE for 12 years and at the Fremont Public School for 8 years. He also served as choir director for the Fremont Presbyterian Church in the 1970's. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Fremont. He is survived by daughters, Dawn and husband, Jeff Bussey of Albion, NE, Mariella and husband, John Lasaitis of Ft. Collins, CO, Kirsten "Kris" and husband, Mike Becker and Jennifer Lowe, all of Fremont; son-in-law, Bill Chapman of Fremont; sister, Mary Davies of California; 13 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Jill Chapman; and brothers, Donald and Robert Bowen. Funeral service will be 2 PM on Thursday, January 2, 2014 at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. The Rev. Tom Shaw of the Church of the Nazarene will officiate. Visitation on Thursday from 11 AM to 2 PM with family receiving friends from noon to 2 PM at the funeral home. Burial will be at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont with military honors conducted by the Fremont Honor Guard of V.F.W. Post #854 and American Legion Post #20.
