Mottet, 78, of 125 Chester avenue, died at St. Joseph hospital at 1:30 a.m. today following surgery. The son of Francis and Mary Mottet, he was born September 26, 1879, in Riverside and came to Ottumwa in 1907. He was married to Leona Schwartz May 6, 1925. She survives. He was employed with the Milwaukee railroad for 45 years and was an engineer at the time of his retirement in 1951. Besides his wife he is survived by five sons, Robert J. of Minneapolis, Raymond of Cleveland, John Edward of Cedar Rapids and Francis P. and James B. Mottet of Ottumwa; a daughter, Miss Mary Mottet of Ottumwa; a brother, William L. Mottet of Ottumwa; and four sisters, Mrs. Marie Haywood of West Des Moines, Mrs. Helen Tressed, Mrs. Edna Stoessel and Mrs. Marguerite Buchanan, all of Ottumwa; and ll grandchildren. Mr. Mottet was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters. The body is at the Vaughan funeral home where it will remain until Tuesday morning when it will be taken to the Mottet home at 10 a m. The funeral is tentatively set for Wednesday morning. ---------------------- “Mottet Rites,” From “Ottumwa Daily Courier,” Tuesday, June 18, 1957: Funeral services for John R. Mottet, 78, of 425 Chester avenue, who died Monday morning at the St. Joseph hospital, will be held Wednesday at the Mottet home at 9:30 a.m. and at the Sacred Heart Catholic church at 10 o’clock. A solemn requiem high mass will be celebrated by his nephew, the Rev. Marvin Mottet of Davenport. The Rev. Sylvester Conrad, assistant at St. Patrick’s church, will serve as the deacon and the Rev. L.J. Leonhardt, chaplain at St. Joseph hospital, will be the subdeacon. The Rev. Robert Schmidt of Clinton will act as master of ceremonies. The sermon will be delivered by Father Conrad. Pallbearers will be Joseph Lahr, Martin O’Hara, James Schwartz, Tony Genochio, Edward Love, and John McGuffy. Burial will be in the Calvary cemetery. The body was removed from the Vaughan funeral home to the Mottet home at 10 a.m. today. Members of the General Shields council of the Knights of Columbus will meet at the K. of C. Hall at 7:30 p.m. today and go in a body to meet with friends at the Mottet home at 8 o’clock to recite the rosary.
