John was known by most as "Bud". On March 27, 1953 he was united in marriage to Rose Marie Stokes at his parents' home in Kalama. Bud was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the Army. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received. Bud served for 21 years with the Kalama Volunteer Fire Department from 1962 to 1984. He was also a member of the Kalama Oddfellows, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1927, Woodland. Bud retired from North Pacific Grain Growers in Kalama. Bud bought a small home in Kalama which he remodeled into a large home for his growing family. Before the house was ever totally completed he purchased a government surplus Navy hull that he rebuilt into the "Sea Rider", leading him into his passion in life of salmon charter fishing. He later rebuilt a home in Long Beach that had been extensively damaged by a fire. He retired there. He also spent several years living on his boat, the "Phantom", in the Kalama Marina. While Bud was recuperating from a stroke at the Portland Veterans Hospital, his wife of 44 years, Marie, suddently passed away. He then went back to live in Kalama with his daughter Cindy. In 1999 he moved with Cindy and Chuck to Winlock. Bud passed away September 21, 2003 at home in Winlock. He was preceded in death by his wife Marie, his son Kenneth, his parents John and Goldie, three brothers: Norman, Glenn, and Floyd; and three sisters: Doris Castle, Betty Brockway and Shirley Bean. He is survived by two sons: William (Bill) Rider of Kalama and Donald Rider of Seaview, Wash.; his daughter Susan Rider of Kalama, daughter and son-in-law Cynthia and Charles Knighten of Winlock; 4 brothers; Larry Rider of Manhattan, Montana; Harry Rider of Mesa, Arizona; Don Rider of Williston, North Dakota and Gary Rider of Kalama; 2 sisters: Beverly Johnson of Seaview and Jean Neuman of Kalama; 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held Saturday, September 27th at 1:00 p.m. at the Oddfellows Hall in Kalama.
