Rider passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, in Manhattan at the age of 92. Larry was born on Jan. 8, 1916, to Goldie (Johnson) and John Rider, the fifth of 13 children on a farm in Charbonneau, N.D. He attended school in North Dakota through the eighth grade, then went on to work at various jobs until 1934 when he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). In 1939, he was staying with his uncle in a small cabin on the North Fork of Deep Creek near Townsend, and heard that Frank Wieferich was looking for someone to help on his ranch. There he met the love of his life, Helen Wieferich. With the outbreak of World War II, Larry enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and was stationed in Seattle. Helen joined him in Seattle and they were united in marriage on Aug. 29, 1942. Shortly after enlisting, he was assigned to the Marine Corps and trained as a medic. In the fall of 1943, Larry was deployed to the Pacific as pharmacist mate first class. He spent most of his deployment in the South Pacific with his final assignment on the island of Peleliu. He assisted many surgeons and became known as "Doc" to the troops. He was honorably discharged in October 1945, and was reunited with his wife and young daughter in Helena. Immediately after returning Larry and Helen embarked on a search for a home of their own. In January 1945, they moved to their present home in Manhattan. Larry worked the farm and supplemented their income doing janitorial work for the Manhattan Public Schools for more than 20 years, and also night janitorial work at Manhattan State Bank. During his employment with the school, he planted many of the trees that grace the grounds today. In search of summer pasture for their cattle and sheep they purchased acreage off of Kelly Canyon Road in 1949. Known to many as "the hills," this parcel of land became much more than pasture. It became the family retreat, recreation, and get-away spot. At 78 years young, Larry with the help of his wife, Helen, broke ground on the cabin of their dreams. He continued working on it until his death. In 1972, they converted the family farm into Rider's Court, which continues to provide spacious living for the young and old. Expanding on his delight for watching trees grow, he planted trees every year in the Court, resulting in the welcoming atmosphere that you see today. Larry served his community for many years on the Meadow View Cemetery Board and the Manhattan Rural Fire Board. He was an active member in the American Legion and the Manhattan Rifle Club, where he shot competitively for many years. He was also an avid hunter, bringing home too many animals to count including antelope, deer and elk to feed his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Goldie Rider; brothers, Norman, Floyd, Harry, Glen, Bud; sisters, Doris, Betty, Shirley; and grandson, Robbie. He is survived by Helen, his wife of 66 of years, in Manhattan; and their six children: Donna (Gary) Bos of Manhattan, Victoria (Dale) Ellison of Manhattan, Carolyn Rowe of Naperville, Ill., Diane Rider of Spokane, Wash., William (Rosanne) Rider of Manhattan, and Theresa (John) Johnson of Manhattan. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; his brothers, Gary of Kalama, Wash., Don of Williston, N.D.; and sisters, Beverly Johnson of Longview, Wash., and Jean Newman of Kalama, Wash. Graveside services with military honors will follow at Meadow View Cemetery in Manhattan.
