Born on March 24, 1923, in Kifer, he was the son of the late Alonzo and Viola Slider. The last of his immediate family, he was also preceded in death by four brothers, Alonzo, Estel, Kirk and William Slider; five sisters, Myrtle Gray, Elsie Robinette, Opal Crabtree, Dorothy Lewis and Grace Slider. Read More	----CRESAPTOWN,MARYLAND -- John Richard Slider I, 77, of Misty Lane SW, died Monday, July 3, 2000, at his residence. Born on March 24, 1923, in Kifer, he was the son of the late Alonzo and Viola Slider. The last of his immediate family, he was also preceded in death by four brothers, Alonzo, Estel, Kirk and William Slider; five sisters, Myrtle Gray, Elsie Robinette, Opal Crabtree, Dorothy Lewis and Grace Slider. After graduating from Oldtown High School, he served six years in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was aboard an aircraft carrier and was stationed in Jacksonville, Fla., and Rhode Island. He was retired from Yoder's, Allegany County Sanitary Commission and Benchmark Mechanical Contractors, Inc. He was active in family, Masons and Shrine Club. He was a member of Cresaptown United Methodist Church and previously served as their superintendent. He leaves his wife of 58 years, Colleen L. Slider; one daughter, Karen L. Lamp and husband James, Martinsburg, W.Va.; two sons, John R. "Rick" Slider II and wife Jenny, Jeffrey L. Slider and wife Debi, Cumberland. He was also the much beloved "Pap Pap" to Jami Lynn Lamp, Jon Garland Lamp and wife Lisa, Tara Lynn Slider, Aimee Lynn Slider and John R. "Jack" Slider III. Funeral and interment services are private. Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap, Flintstone. Military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard. The Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Cresaptown, is handling the arrangements.
