Description	:	John was the oldest of twelve children of Joseph and Elizabeth Ritchie of Black's Corners and Gladys, the daughter of James and Rebecca White was the youngest of five children. Meeting when they were 16 years of age at a community affair, their courtship - before - during - after the First World War was customary for the times. But it wasn't until a blustery February day in 1921 they were married in a Methodist ceremony in the White Family home. Meeting when they were 16 years of age at a community affair, their courtship - before - during - after the First World War was customary for the times. But it wasn't until a blustery February day in 1921 they were married in a Methodist ceremony in the White Family home. So, at age 24 the couple having purchased their own 100 acre farm settled down to the rural life of farming and raising a family in the community of Whittington. Their son was born in 1922; the first baby to be born in the Lord Dufferin Hospital in Orangeville. Elizabeth (me) came in 1924 assisted by the local mid wife Mrs William Phillips. My younger brother was born in 1935 in the midst of the great depression. The Dirty Thirties were not kind years but John and Gladys somehow hung on. Money, someway, was found for the children's education and the two oldest children needing further education after graduating from Whittington Public School, were sent as boarders in private homes in Orangeville to attend and graduate from high school, while the youngest remained at Whittington Public school. The Second World War broke out in 1939 and during the years 1939-1945 The two oldest children went to school in Toronto- One to work - One to train as a teacher at the Toronto Normal School. On graduation, I taught in the Toronto School Board system and was teaching there when the war ended. The war brought mixed blessings. On the positive side, it ended the Great Depression and times got better. But Canadian life was irrevocably changed by the war and farming was no exception. John and Gladys, when the war ended decided to sell their farm to Clair Trimble, bought a creamery in Fenelon Falls and moved with their sons.
