His wife, Mrs. Josephine Poppett, found the body when she went in search of him after he failed to answer her calls. She did not hear the report of the revolver. Prominent in business and civic circles of San Bernardino for two-thirds of a century, Mr. Poppett had been in the best of health, relatives said. Of late, however, he had been troubled by finances, they said, continued brooding apparently leading him to take his life. BORN IN CITY He was born in San Bernardino and had lived here all his life. For more than a quarter of a century he and his wife had occupied the E street home where he died. Six brothers and two sisters survive. The brothers are Ed Poppett, veteran police officer; Mawson Poppett, Grover Poppett and Ira Poppett, all of San Bernardino; George Poppett of Big Bear valley and Thurman Poppett, of Button Willow, near Bakersfield. The sisters are Mrs. W. E. Hitchcock and Mrs. Cleveland martin, both of San Bernardino. PROMINENT LODGEMAN He retired from active business participation about 18 years ago, but remained prominent in civic and fraternal circles. He was a member of the Masons, Eagles and Native Sons. Funeral arrangements are in charge of the Mark B. Shaw Co., and will be announced later. Deputy Coroner E. P. Doyle investigated the death. Shaw Co. memorial chapel. Interment Pioneer cemetery. Rev. Otis D. Ironmonger will conduct the service. The San Bernardino Daily Sun (San Bernardino, CA.), P. 19, Col. 2 Thu., Jan. 3, 1935 JOHN R. POPPETT Funeral services for John R. Poppett were held at 3 p.m. yesterday from Mark B. Shaw Memorial chapel, with the Rev. Otis D. Ironmonger and F. and A.M. No. 348 officiating. Franklin Record, with Mrs. Gertrude Engel accompanying, sang “The Prayer Perfect” and “Abide With Me.” Interment was in Pioneer (City) cemetery.
