Read More	GROPP, JOHN SAMUEL - (SEC. 3) (The Advocate, March 30, 1923) Samuel Gropp, an old and highly respected citizen of this county, passed away Tuesday morning at 4:30 o'clock, at his home 20 miles Northwest of Lakin. The deceased has resided in this county for over 35 years and was in his seventy-fifth year when death called him. He leaves a large number of relatives and a host of friends to mourn his loss, and The Advocate extends heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved ones, in this, their hour of sorrow. Samuel Gropp was born June 19, 1848, at Insterburg, Germany. He served in the reserve army in the Franco-Prussian war in 1871, after which he lived in Dortmund three years with his family before coming to America. In 1885 he came with his family to America, making his home in Iowa for two years, and in the spring of 1887 coming to Kearny County, he took up government land and resided until his death on Tuesday morning, March 27, age 74 years, 9 months & 8 days. Mr. Gropp was married at the age of twenty-five to Mille Szagun, and nine children were born to this union, five of whom are still living: Otto, Albert and Rudolph Gropp, all of Lakin; Mrs. Millie Bridgeman of Cotter, AR; and Mrs. Elizabeth O'Brien of Conway Springs, Kansas. His first wife died in 1892 and the following year he married Emma Pritzkat. Eight children were born to this union, five are living: Richard, George, Emma and Arthur Gropp, all living at home, & Mrs. O.J. Kurz of Kendall. He also leaves a sister in Berlin, Germany, twenty-five grandchildren and one great grandchild. The deceased was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Funeral services were held in the Kendall Church Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Karl Karstensen, Lutheran minister, assisted by Rev. Manka of Garden City,and the remains laid to rest in the Kendall Cemetery.
