Description	:	A Soldier Sleeps John S. Sproul was born in Ohio, Jan. 26, 1843, and died in this city, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. F. R. Briggs, Feb. 20th, 1912, being 69 years old. He came to Iowa with his parents when quite young and settled in Mahaska County. He was married to Sarah E. Sproul was born in Ohio, Jan. 26, 1843, and died in this city, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. F. R. Briggs, Feb. 20th, 1912, being 69 years old. He came to Iowa with his parents when quite young and settled in Mahaska County. He was married to Sarah E. McCain, June 13, 1867, and they moved to this vicinity about thirty years ago where he has lived until the past year. He leaves seven children to mourn his passing, four sons and three daughters, Ed, John, Will and Wesley Sproul; Mrs. F.R. Briggs, Mrs. F. O. Fione, and Mrs. D.H. Wheeler, of Danville, Ill. All the children were here at his death. Also he leaves four brothers and one sister. One brother, James Sproul, of Grand Island, Nebr, the only one who was able to be present at this time. One daughter died in infancy and his wife last January after a lingering illness of almost a year. Since that time he has been at the Soldiers' Home in Marshalltown, Iowa, until he was taken with a heavy cold when he came back home. He was unable to overcome his cold which resulted in congestion of the lungs. He enlisted in the Civil war when he was 18 years old in the spring of 1861 and served during the entire war, enlisted a second time at the end of the first three years. He was a member of Co. C 7th Iowa volunteer infantry and was in the Battles of Shiloh, Bull Run, Corinth, and several other valorious battles. He marched with Sherman in his march to the Sea. He has been a member of the G. A. R. Post No. 59, of this city for several years.
