Grandpa John Salasek was born in Czechoslovakia April 14, 1844. Grandpa's mother passed away when he was just a small boy. He went to Germany to learn a trade, making wagons, when he returned home, he felt it wasn't his home anymore. His father had married a German lady and had a new family. He felt only the old family dog remembered him. There were three half brothers, he lost track of them. He came to the States in 1869 shortly after he married Katherine Sobotka. After a year in America he sent for his wife to come to America, they settled at Montour, Iowa where Grandpa was employed on the railroad. Then they moved to Marshalltown, a daughter Anna was born April 16, 1874. Later they moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa where their son John was born January 2, 1877. A few years later they bought a little farm northeast of Toledo, Iowa. There another daughter Julia was born March 28, 1883. Grandpa lived on this farm till his death April 1894. Grandma Salasek was also born in the Old Country November 9, 1847. She passed away November 25, 1920 at the home of her daughter, Julia (Mrs. Vince Axler) near Traer and is buried at Buckingham Cemetery, north of Traer, while Grandpa Salasek was buried at Holy Trinity. Grandma had one sister six years older than herself, who came to America with her husband and little daughter Francis in 1877. The sister's name was Anna Koudelka; she passed away August 1927 at the age of 86 years at Ferguson, Iowa south of Marshalltown. Her husband, John Koudelka died December 14, 1901. The daughter Francis married James Brejcha, but later they changed their name to Brechal. They had seven children John, Anna, James, Mayme, Bill, Sophie and Ralph. [by Vera Sevcik, Tama County History, 1987, F900] "Grandpa Salasek John (Sr.) was born in Country Bohemia Czecho-Slovak April 14th 1844 and came to America in spring of 1869, shortly after he was married in Czech Country to Katherina Sobotka. A year later, he sent for his wife to come to America. They settled at Montour, Iowa, where Grandpa was employed on the railroad. Grandpa was by trade a wagon maker. He learned his trade in Germany at the age of 16 years. He was taken into the home of the shopkeeper, where is worked for his board for two years to learn the trade. Then he worked for him for three years for a small wage, and still lived with the family. They had three small boys. The Mrs. was very kind; she treated him as one of her sons. Grandpa's mother died when he was just a small boy. Later his father (Vaclav) married again and had two more sons. Never heard of them after Grandpa left Old Country.
