Description	:	Samuel Utterback, 82, well known local man, died last Friday afternoon at the Sigourney hospital, where he had been a patient for a week after suffering a stroke at his home here on December 31. John Samuel Utterback was born at Hayesville on July 17, 1869 and was a son of Elliott and Mary Harrell Utterback. He was the last of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by two brothers, one in infancy and William, and three sisters, Mrs. Nancy Dawson, Mrs. Phoebe Duree and Mrs. Rebecca Street. John Samuel Utterback was born at Hayesville on July 17, 1869 and was a son of Elliott and Mary Harrell Utterback. He was the last of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by two brothers, one in infancy and William, and three sisters, Mrs. Nancy Dawson, Mrs. Phoebe Duree and Mrs. Rebecca Street. On December 24, 1900, he was married to Anna Neumann of What Cheer and they became the parents of one daughter, Beulah Lucille, who preceded her parents in death on September 10, 1913. His wife also preceded him in death, on August 16, 1948. Since her death he had remained in his home here and a great-niece, Mrs. Fred Morrow and her husband, lived with him. “Sam” as he was affectionately known by his wide circle of friends, lived in Sigourney most of his life, and was a cement contractor for many years, and many sidewalks and other cement work in Sigourney remain as memorials of his life’s work. For the past 17 years he had been custodian of the Sigourney Public Library, retiring only recently because of failing health. His closest survivors are a number of nieces and nephews. He was a faithful member of the local Christian church, and also had been a member of the Knights of Pythias. The funeral service was held on Monday afternoon at the Christian church, conducted by his pastor, the Rev. Robert M. Hall. Burial was in West cemetery.
