Isaac Shelby, who fought at King's Mountain, in the Revolution, and was subsequently Governor of Kentucky. The first county seat was at Oak Dale, but was moved to Shelbyville in 1836. "JOHN SANFORD DUNCAN (Postmaster, Shelbyville). For 17 years continuously Mr. Duncan has had charge of the postoffice at Shelbyville, and for 43 years he has been one of the respected and worthy citizens of the county. Now in the afternoon of life and soon to enter the ark of the evening horizon, he can look back ... Mr. Duncan was born in Nelson Co. KY, February 1, 1815. His parents were George and Nancy (Connelly) Duncan, both originally from Virginia. Reared in Kentucky, November 14, 1837, he was married to Miss Matilda Lyne, a daughter of Thomas and Mary (Connelly) Lyne, of Woodford county. In 1840 he came to Missouri and settled in Shelby county in the spring of the following year. ..." OBITUARY: From a Funeral Notice in the Scott Family Bible, held by James Scott: "The funeral services of John Sanford Duncan will take place from the Berean M.E. Church in Shelbyville, Mo., on Friday, Feb. 9, 1906, at 3:30 P.M., conducted by Rev. J.M. O'Bryen, assisted by Revs. W.H. Burris and J.J. Reed. Buriel I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Born in Bloomfield, Nelson County, Ky., Feb. 1, 1815; died at his home in Shelbyville, Mo., Feb. 8, 1906. Aged 91 years, 7 days." An Old Citizen Gone. John S. Duncan, one of the oldest citizens of Shelbyville, died at his home in this city Thursday, Feb. 8, 1906, at 6 a.m. at the ripe old age of 91 years. Uncle John S., as he was familiarly called, had been in very poor health for several months and grew weaker day by day until the summons came which relieved him of all pain and worldly cares. He was born in Nelson Co., Ky., Feb. 1, 1815, and came to Missouri in 1840 and the following year located in Shelby county on a farm near Bacon Chapel where he lived for 16 years and then came to this city where he continued to live until his death. He enlisted in the Union army in 1861 and served until near the close of the war. He served as Circuit Clerk and Recorder of this county for two years and afterwards was postmaster in this city for nearly 20 years. He was married to Matilda Lyne in Woodford county, Ky., Nov. 14,1837. To this union were born 10 children, 6 of them now living —Mrs. J.H. Vanskike of near Kirby, Geo. S. Duncan of Kansas City, Mrs. H.B. Dines and C.B. Duncan of Quincy, Mrs. N.C. Miller and Miss Lillie Duncan of this city. The deceased was a member of the M.E. Church and lived a christian life. The funeral services were held at the Berian M.E. church in this city on Friday, Feb. 9, at 3:30 p.m. conducted by Rev. J.M. O'Bryen, assisted by Rev. J. J. Reed. Duncan for 65 years a resident of this county died at his home in Shelbyville yesterday morning, being at the time of his death a few days past 91 years old. He was born in Nelson county, Kentucky Feb. 1st, 1815 and came to Missouri in 1840 and to Shelby County the following year and for 16 years lived on a farm near Bacon Chapel and then moved to Shelbyville where he continued to live until his death. In 1861 he enlisted in the Union army and served until near the end of the war when he was appointed Circuit clerk and Recorder which position he held two years. Later he was for about 20 years postmaster at Shelbyville. He is survived by the following children: Mrs. J. H. Vanskike of near Kirby, George S. Duncan of Kansas City, Mrs. H. B. Dines and C. B. Duncan of Quincy. Mrs. N. C. Miller and Miss Lillie Duncan of Shelbyville. Mr. Duncan was a member of the M. E. Church and the funeral will be held in that church at Shelbyville this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock.
