Read More	John Scott Shank was born on April 14, 1932, and received eternal rest on May 5, 2018. In 1951, John married Beth Norris Shank. John and Beth farmed on several family homesteads and then settled on Rocky Springs Farm, where they tended a dairy herd and raised their children. John's entrepreneurial spirit led him to begin a land-development company that helped hundreds of families find a place to call home in his beloved Washington County. John was proud to serve as a county commissioner from 1989 to 1998. Following Beth's passing, John married Madeline Kunkel, who shared his tenacity and love for the earth. The couple tended a large garden and shared their faith in their Hancock home. As a member and leader of Salem Reformed Church, John was instrumental in the construction of their family life center. John was among the founders of the Washington County agriculture museum and contributed to the development of the Agricultural Education Center in Sharpsburg. John was an active member and supporter of 4-H and FFA. He was a leader in numerous agricultural organizations, including Maryland and Virginia Milk Producers, Farm Bureau, Holstein Association and Soil Conservation. In addition to his first wife, Beth, John was preceded in death by his son, John Scott Shank II; and siblings, Robert Shank, Ralph Shank and Geneva Clark. John is survived by his daughter, Bonnie Weddle and her husband, Jim, of Creek Bound Farms; and his wife, Madeline Shank, whose daughters are Deborah Hixon (John Harshbarger) and Dena Hixon (Kurt Kershow). John's most celebrated harvest was his grandchildren, Jennifer Weddle Smith (Jonathan), John Scott Shank III (Kristen), Jeremiah Weddle (Janelle), Carrie Aaron (Patrick), Jamie Beth Derr (Chris), Thomas Shank, Alys Harshbarger, and Madeleine and Clara Kershow; and his great-grandchildren, Christian, Luis, Justin, Benjamin and Matthew Smith, Elijah and Noah Weddle, Levi and Zachary Derr, Grace and Cade Aaron, and a pair of highly anticipated Shank twins. A visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, May 7, 2018, at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, Md. Funeral and interment services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at Salem Reformed Church, 13182 Salem Church Road, Hagerstown. The Revs. Steve Wagoner and Dr. Jennifer Smith, granddaughter, officiated.
