Carroll Times - Thursday, June 10, 1926 - John Cheasbro, aged about 35 years, was found dead in the garage at the A.J. Hodges home yesterday, shortly after noon, and according to the condition of the body, Coroner Wm. J. Forrest gave as his opinion that death came at about 11 o'clock. Deceased was spending the first day of his annual vacation, he being in the employ of the Swaney Auto company. He was to meet Miss Elizabeth Lammers some time during the day and they were to complete the arrangements for their marriage, which was to take place Friday of this week. It is presumed that he had gone into the garage to tune up the motor of his car and from appearances he had been working on the coil. He Was overcome by the fumes of the gas, and the motor continued to run until all of the gasoline was exhausted. Just before the noon hour, Mr. Hodges had gone past the garage and noticed gas fumes, and kicked the door open, but saw nothing out of the ordinary, and it was not until later that the body was found. Coroner Forrest said that because of the indisputable evidence of the position the body lay in, as well as the evidence of gas fumes, an inquest was not necessary. Both of the parents of the deceased young man are dead, and the only relatives are a sister, Mrs. A.M. Beach, who resides at Stratford, and a brother, Byron, of Washington state. Carroll Times - Thursday, June 17, 1926 - Funeral services for John Sherman Cheasbro, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Cheasbro, were held Saturday afternoon at the Presbyterian church, Rev. W.H. Parker officiating. The services were largely attended by friends of the young man, whose tragic death Wednesday of last week came as such a shock to the city and to his many friends. John Cheasbro was the youngest child of Mr. and Mrs J.H. Cheasbro and was born in this city January 22, 1889. He was educated in the public schools and with the exception of the time spent in the World war lived here his entire life. During the war he was in the service 18 months, five of which were spent in France. He was employed by the Swaney Auto company at the time he went into service and when he returned, again entered the employ of the company, where he proved himself at all times a valuable and capable employee. He was just starting the first day of his annual vacation when he was accidentally killed. He was buried in the family lot of the Carroll cemetery with full military honors. The pallbearers were fellow employees of the Swaney Auto company, Chris Hanson, Harold Traner, R.E. McCoy, Hen Trupke, Virgil Foxworthy and Freeman McCoy of Rockwell City. The color bearers were Dr. C C. Bowie and Frank Flanegan, Andy Ley and P.H. Cooney were color guards. Joe Micka, commander of Maurice Dunn post, followed the casket. Earl Crackling was in command of the escort composed of Mayor Hattigan, Joe Heue, Joe Mailer, Henry Conway, Harry Nestle, Mike Maystadt, Henry Ewaldt and Merel Farrell. Howard Hodges was the trumpeter. The untimely death of this young man is greatly felt by his sister, Mrs. Ada Beach of Stratford, Ia., who with her two sons, John Myron and Chester arrived to attend the funeral. There is but one other immediate relative, a brother, J.B. Cheasbro, of Bellingham, Wash. Mr. Cheasbro was raised a Baptist and attended the Baptist church in this city and was ever ready to help in its support.
