The news of his death brought sorrow throughout the community. While it was recognized that he was ill for quite sometime, his courage and will to live kept him at his customary duties at the bank many times when he should have been resting. Cheerful and optimistic he kept going and was faithful at the bank, at his church and in his social and fraternal organizations. Although the veteran banker had been in failing health, death came unexpectedly at 5 o'clock this morning at his home. It came as a surprise to his family and friends. Mr. Gantz was born in Prosperity, on June 14. 1878. a son of Mr. and Mrs. David Gantz. He was educated in Claysville public schools and the Washington Business College. A resident of this locality for almost half a century, Mr. Gantz came to the Houston First National bank as teller in 1905 and had been president of the institution since 1936. Mr. Gantz was active in many civic and fraternal organizations. He was past master of the Claysville Lodge 447 F. and A. M., member of Syria Temple, Pittsburgh Consistory, Syria Temple Luncheon Club, Jacques de Molay Commandery No. 3, Washington-Greene County Shrine Caravan No. 2, Washington Golf and Country Club, Houston Volunteer Fire Department, Canonsburg-Houston Rotary Club of which he was treasurer for 20 years. Director of Chartiers Building and Loan Association, 50-year life member of the Canon Lodge No. 204 Knights of Pythias, former director of the Washington County Bankers Association, member of Board of Trustees of Houston U. P Church for over 30 years and treasurer cf the church for 20 years. He recently retired as secretary of the Borough of Houston after holding the office for over 40 years. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ida Berry Gantz; three brothers. Henry M., Claysville; J. Arthur, Paul's Valley, Okla. and R. Clinton, Dellingham, Wash.; two sisters, Mrs. Celicia Baker and Miss Jennie Gantz, of Claysville. Friends will be received after 7 o'clock this evening at the Speak-man Funeral Home, where services will be held Thursday at 3 p. m. in charge of his pastor. Dr. E. V. Condron.
