His younger wife, Mary Miles [Eyre} Sinclair, who was 18 years younger than him, had come to America from England at the age of 15. Both met on the Old Oregon Trail in 1843. After intervening to help Mary out of a desperate situation there, they headed together to the Territory of California, which was still owned by Mexico at the time.
