Description	:	John was a son of Johannes and _______ Schleiffer, who immigrated to Pennsylvania from Germany. John migrated from Pennsylvania to Frederick County along with Peter Gaver and Peter Miller. John married Asenath, daughter of Peter or Jacob Gaver, about 1766. Children born: John Jr, Elizabeth, Samuel, David, Peter, Jacob, and Ezra. John was a Reverend in the Broad Run Brethern Church, located on the family property, just South of Burkittsville. John and Asenath were both buried at the Slifer Cemetery along with many other early Brethern settlers. John and Asenath were both buried at the Slifer Cemetery along with many other early Brethern settlers. *John and Elizabeth Slifer's headstones were removed at some point, from the Slifer Cemetery to the Pleasant View cemetery. The Broad Run Brethern Church, started by John's father, held their services near the Slifer cemetery, and many of their parishioners were buried there. By the 1850's, the Slifer cemetery was no longer used for burials. Likely due to the Brethern Church's new location at Pleasant View, East of Burkittsville. It's not known why John, Asenath, son Peter, and other headstones were moved, in the 1950's per one source, while other headstones were left. According to "Names in Stone, 75,000 Cemetery Inscriptions From Frederick County, Maryland", v. 2. 1985, page 1042: "Slifer, John Sr 17 Oct 1822 79-5-3 (Burkv. Plst. Vw. 153) This stone lies flat by East fence. Since a similar stone was copied 3 years earlier in Burkv. Slifer 155 it may be the same one removed to this spot." In the Slifer cemetery, there remains a stone with the initials "J S - 1822". Note that John Slifer was a Brethern minister, and was fined for being a pacifist. The Rev War marker in Pleasant View Cemetery belongs to different "John Slifer". My Grandmother's cousin, Ella M Dulany, with the help of the DAR, mistakenly believed it was our ancestor that served in the Rev War. John may have been enrolled or drafted into the militia, but he and others of the Brethern faith wouldn't have reported for muster.
